Cops came by this morning for next of kin info...
I live in a condo on Pensacola Bay in Florida. My building is a 13-story concrete and steel structure built in 1964. I told the cops I wasn't evacuating so they made me sign some form and said if we called 911 during the storm they might not dispatch out. Weather here is getting nasty. I can see 20 ft+ waves pounding Pensacola Beach from my vantage point. Our pier extending into the bay is under water getting pounded by surge and waves (It was just rebuilt this year after getting destroyed by Isidore). Wind is hissing and rattling windows - and are expected to get up to 120+ mph later! I think poor Pcola is gonna get the brunt of this monster... Wish me luck!

4. I'd evacuate, if you can...

My business partner's 70 something year old neighbor in Melbourne Beach rode out Frances and said it was the worst decision he ever made. He's ridden out hurricanes all his life but said this time he honestly thought he was going to die. He did survive, but Frances ending up being only a category 2 when it made landfall...

on edit: Good Luck. If you stay, you will certainly need it.

5. Evacuate!
During hurricane Camille several years ago, people living in a similar condo were all killed when the hurricane wiped out the building. All that is left of the building now is traces of the foundation. The rising water of the storm surge knocked down the building.

Don't risk your life. Evacuate!

8. Get out
And I'm glad the cops made you sign something.

There is no reason to put rescuers at risk because you decided to ignore an evacuation order.

Sorry to be harsh, but too many first responders get killed because people don't use common sense.

do you have plenty of food and especially water? Batteries, a headlamp and things to read? a camera? a videocamera or audio tape to make a journal of the sounds and sights? a cell phone?

a rosary?

good luck.

and while we're at at, what does this have to do with the campaign?

11. My wife stayed in Charleston during Hugo
This was before we were married.

I asked her why in the hell she would stay there. Her answer: "Because I was young and stupid".

I don't know if you are young and I assume you aren't stupid because you are here at DU. Why don't you do the smart thing and get the hell out? Your possessions sure don't need you there.
