Obama live announcing Geithner as Sec of Treasury
Congrats to Tim and to Obama. Good choice, the only choice, according to many experts.

3. Geithner's success or failure will make or break Obama's re-election...
It's a controversial pick. If Geithner does a good job, people will forgive the tax issue. But if he doesn't do a very good job, people will harp on the tax issue as proof that he shouldn't have been picked, blah blah blah. It sucks, but Obama's entire presidency is going to be judged on the economy even though this mess is not his fault. He's doing a lot of really good things outside of the economy (mainly reversing Bush's extremist right wing policies), but I fear that he's not going to get a fair judgment from the public if the economy is still down the tubes in 2012.

4. Yes. I suspect you are right but I think expectations are somewhat low..
As long as Obama/Geithner keep the economy from totally tanking then that will be considered a "success".

17. I believe it is the viewpoint of most Americans.
Obama has 70% approval now. He will be given the benefit of the doubt by most. Maybe you should try it.

5. I expect their first attention will be to the banks.
If they're not fixed, nothing else will much matter.

8. Geithner is a real mixed bag.
His lack of supervision over Citibank helped with Citibank's questionable at best financial activities.

On the other hand for better or worse, this guy know what is going on at the Treasury Dept.

7. It's getting a bit scary... and likely to get scarier.
Thank goodness Geithner, Summers, Obama and the rest of the team can now get to work.

10. More layoffs in one day than the whole month of December

I can't think of a better man or woman right now who
would have moved on things faster than President Obama.

That gives me some solace. Its not gonna be pretty.

However a little bit of cheer is that caterpillar predicted the recession
in 2007 before anyone in their league. They did say today they see
some recovery starting in the fall.

9. I don't know
this guy is supposed to be a good fit, but on its face a TS with a "failure to pay taxes" problem seems to be too much. He better be great.

11. The tax thing is a bit disturbing but in the grand scheme of things it's irrelevant.
Geithner will be judged based on how he performs in the next couple of years. If he comes up with a plan that saves our economy he will be seen as a hero and a genius.
