President Obama's week in review (is this what we signed up for?)
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 10:52 AM by underpants
*I apologize for the editorializing ahead of time*

Becomes President, sets out progressive agenda, tells off Bush & Cheney publicly, walks Bush to the curb

Casts out culture of corruption and insider dealings (lobbyists-for the most part)

Closes Gitmo
Ends torture as policy
Specifically states that al-Marri ain't going anywhere

Professionalizes the White House staff. Technology upgrades to follow.

Politely introduces himself to the White House press corp and stands down chippy twerp from Politico

Stings the wilderness area of Pakistani (normal SOP really) letting the Pentagon show that their new boss can throw a punch.

Brings State into the real world (Hillary)

Tells Republicans to sit-and-spin "I WON"

Pulls a data dump-lifting the abortion gag rule and reintroducing US funding for healthiER babies in developing countries
-Sunday morning shows and the punditry may not have time to formulate the conventional wisdom on this in only 48 hours

What have I missed?

Pretty good so far, I'd say.

He "wants Obama to fail" so you know his head is in danger of exploding ..knowing Obama is fighting back.

20. Compared to the last guy?
Dubya Bush imposed the Mexico City Policy, had the GPO closed so Clinton's last-minute regulations couldn't be published in the Federal Register, then went on vacation.

Obama's been living on strong coffee for the last week.

Big difference.

5. HE SUSPENDED BUSH'S LAST MINUTE ORDER TO LET WOLVES IN YELLOWSTONE BE KILLED!
That suspension/order has translated into real-time saving of a lot of wolves.

It's only a suspension. I think the organizations involved still will be able to contest it and show that it's necessary, or whatever.

Still, instead of a President just saying "OK" and signing a last minute order to allow his big-bidness friends to kill off animals so they can make more money, instead of having to show that it's really necessary (showing a complete lack of regard for LIFE....yes, Bush, animals have "lives," too, and contribute to the world)...instead of that, we now have a President that takes position that the environment and animals should be assumed to be valuable, and it must be proven that something is necessary before it will be allowed to be destroyed, damaged, or killed, for profit.

YAAAAAAAAAYYYY!

I forgot that one

I did NOT know that he did that with the wolves. Good for him.

8. Yes, pretty good so far. But what I really dread is
Afghanistan. If the Obama administration gets bogged down in Afghanistan, like Bush bogged us down in Iraq, it will be another morass, and will drain energy (and money) out of the reforms desperately needed at home.

9. You can't help but get bogged down there
No one wants Afghanistan really. The warlords have their piece and if you want Kabul?? Fine have it...but that is about it.

This is the reason the Taliban was able to take it over. No one really wants it.

The Soviets couldn't take it, Alexander couldn't take it, I am not sure if any of the Khan's even tried.

16. Bipartisanship sucks
It's much more difficult in practice than in theory.
President Obama already had to shut up an obstructionist.
We all have had enough of the bickering, but I'm at the point where I really can't tolerate the wrong anymore.
For the past eight years these people have repeatedly voted for and supported the most destructive policies that our country has ever endured. They have attempted to re-define our most basic tenets of liberty, freedom, and justice into principles that are anything but.
Why do we even give these people the benefit of the doubt anymore?
In our own little worlds, I'm sure many of you have acquaintances that vote Republican. Personally, I know several couples that I have long considered friends that differ greatly with me on politics. I always welcomed the debate, but now - at this time in our history - I just can't deal with them anymore. I really would rather lose their friendship than try anymore. We have already canceled one get-together for Sunday with one such couple.
How stupid are they to actually vote for McCain and that bizarre woman anyway?
How can they possible defend their party's disastrous policies? What will it take for them to realize that trickle-down just doesn't work?
When will they ever admit that the man "who kept this country safe after 9/11" was largely responsible for the failure to keep us safe ON 9/11?
Republicans should be continually exposed and held accountable for the damage that they have wrought. The party should be replaced in the national discourse by several others. The "base" then, would exist only as radical fringe group such as they truly are.

(We cannot neglect our own as the cost of developing the remainder of the world.)

And I will also concede there is so much work to do and I might have missed something too. He's already done a hell of a lot and it all can't be done at once.
