Memos on Bush Are Fake but Accurate, Typist Says
By THE NEW YORK TIMES

OUSTON, Sept. 14 - The secretary for the squadron commander purported to be the author of now-disputed memorandums questioning President Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard said Tuesday that she never typed the documents and believed they are fakes.

But she also said they accurately reflect the thoughts of the commander, Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian, and other memorandums she typed for him about Mr. Bush. "The information in them is correct," the woman, Marian Carr Knox, now 86, said in an interview at her home in Texas. "But I doubt,'' she said, pausing, "it's not anything that I wrote because there are terms in there that are not used by Guards, the format wasn't the way we did it. It looks like someone may have read the originals and put that together."

"We did discuss Bush's conduct and it was a problem Killian was concerned about," Mrs. Knox said. "I think he was writing the memos so there would be some record that he was aware of what was going on and what he had done." But, she said, words like "billets," which appear in the memorandums, were not standard Guard terms....

4. If accurate and fake, they were prepared by someone who knows
that Bush was a "problem." At least it has been corroborated by someone who worked with Killian that Bush was "a problem."

This is not good for Bush.

6. Ah OK .. well heres hoping it works
This should keep Kerry out of the news, what? 5, 10 more days at a minimum? And everytime AWOL is mentioned, CBS's forgeries will be mentioned. Sheeple will remember what? Forgeries IMO.

But I guess this is great news aside from that.

7. Well, what people remember is anyone's guess.
It's quite possible that the longer Vietnam remains the issue, the more fed up people will be with the custodian of the discourse, which would be Bush. Custodian is a polite way of saying trashman.

3. hmmm
who would think to reproduce fake copies of real documents and then direct the blogosphere to discredit them with that theme as the docs are released?

hmmm....

Must have been the same democrat who stole Bush's debate notes and mailed them to the Gore campaign...

13. If he waits long enough

he'll be respectable too. ;)

Noah Cross: Exactly what do you know about me? Sit down.

Jake Gittes: Mainly that you're rich, and too respectable to want your name in the newspapers.

Noah Cross: Of course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.

22. This Interview, Love, Will Provide Great Puzzlement For Future Historians
It is hard to know what to make of it.

It is hard to credit such a detailed recollection of what precisely she typed so long ago, and if they are accurate reflections of what was thought, on what ground is she sure they are not actual documents from the time?

In her statement of what typewriters were available, she fades into obscurity at precisely the critical point: Olympias were replaced by Selectrics in the early seventies, and that is of course the time when the critical document was produced.

There has still been nothing produced that moves me to doubt the authenticity of these documents.

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

10. Or, since Killian wanted these in his own files...
... for his own reasons, maybe he typed them himself, so they would be completely private.

15. Has 4 years of Bush taught you NOTHING?
Facts don't matter, issues don't matter, character doesn't matter.

TECHNICALITIES MATTER, but then, only when the Republican party is concerned, and only when they want them to matter.

20. But of course
All the talking heads will hear is: "Documents are fake."

Then they will start SCREAMING about how the NASTY NASTY LIBERALS are DARING to discredit the Boy King's PERFECT record, and how they've been FOUND OUT and that it's ALL KERRY'S FAULT and HE PLANTED THEM and HE CAUSED WWI, II, AND KOREA and he's a VERY BAD MAN and I WANT MY MOMMY BECAUSE MEAN OLD JOHN KERRY IS TRYING TO OUST THE NOBLE GEORGE DUBYA FROM OFFICE AND I'M SCARED AND I JUST WET MYSELF.

Whoa. I kinda sounded like Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly rolled into one.

16. That could explain

Why the WH didn't challenge their validity. there was nothing in them that was out of character for Shrub, so they assumed they were legit. Surely shrub himself wasn't surprised by what they said.

17. Hodges too.
When he was listening to them over the phone, he confirmed the details. Only when he saw the memos did he start to backpedal.

The best the White House could do is say, "Well, they show Bush was talking with his commanders about going to Alabama..." because if they had been the actual memos, that's all they could have said. They thought it was the real thing.
