Mitt Gillibrand just pulled a Romney on gun control in her press confrence
Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 12:46 PM by FLAprogressive
this was one of the issues I actually agree(d) with her on.....looks like she's pulling a 180 and praising gun grabber McCarthy.

I'm telling you, NYers, she has zero integrity...she'll waffle on positions just to please whoever her constituents are.

15. I agree. She mentioned Maloney saying she, Gillibrand, would do a great job if chosen,
and then mentioned her support of background checks for gun purchasers.

As someone else pointed out, Howard Dean has an A rating from the NRA and he seems to be a favorite on this board.

3. I am in no way supporting her, but I have always wondered if an elected.
official should always stand by what they believe, or should they always reflect the wants of those that elected them? I am not pleading either case. I have always wondered about that. Some elected officials get criticised for doing one, while others get criticised for doing the other.

8. Things political leaders can do to resolve this are use their leadership skills to build concensus
and use their rhetorical skills to move public opinion toward their position.
But it's hard to do that because most people will only pay attention to like the first 10 words.

21. I happen to think a Rep. should vote the wishes of their constituents.
Isn't that why we support Dems over Pubs? Th Dem usually shares our ideas.

I've said this many times when DUers were screaming about Nelson from Fl. or some other Dem who just voted against a Dem. bill. If that's the position his constitutnets want him to take, then he did the right thing.

First, it's "OMG SHE IS GOING TO BE A TOTAL LIEBERMAN SELLOUT AWFUL DINO."
Reasonable people reply, well, no, she has a strong liberal history, but has compromised on issues important to her red district. She'll be more liberal as a blue-state Senator.

As it turns out, she is shifting more liberal as a blue-state Senator.

Now, of course, it's "OMG SHE IS TOTALLY A SELLOUT LOOK AT HOW LIBERAL SHE IS NOW."

57. I see no evidence so far that she doesn't support gun rights.
She has endorsed background checks, which even the NRA is OK with. She has not, to my knowledge, endorsed the "assault weapon" fraud or any other new restrictions on lawful ownership, though if she has that would certainly change things.

And she is, in fact, progressive. She is considerably to the left of most of the DLC (and unlike most of the DLC, she's apparently not a pro-gun-bans zealot).
