The other thing that occurs to me is that the steady repetition of the Bush-in-the-guard photos may be starting to take its toll on the coWard. As these visual images become part of voters' consciousness, along with the fact that there are (at a minimum) questions about his service and that he may not be truthful, the coWard's negatives go up.

And as this reduction of trust in the coWard builds, any October surprise becomes more likely to be viewed with skepticism, and therefore potentially ineffective.
