It was a good prayer for a while.
He touched on some progressive values with a social gospel message.

Then he made it exclusionary and divisive. Very disappointing. It's bad enough that he's a complete asshat. He could have at least given a decent inclusive prayer that respects people of all faiths or no faith.

3. reciting the lord's prayer.
Not even all Christian denominations think that's appropriate. Jesus did say to avoid "vain repetitions" when praying. He also made a point of making it about Jesus instead of just praying to God or a higher power/creator etc.

4. What would respect mean in that context?
Seriously. When you believe in a religion where the founder says "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the Father but by me"

What does respect mean? Warren's religion is a religion that believes everyone who does not agree on certain core issues (the divinity Christ, forgiveness of sin through Christ's death) is going to go to hell.

That does not leave a lot of room for respect, if that's what he really believes.

11. True point, but
most clergy of any religion have enough respect for their audience when they pray for public gatherings like this to phrase the prayer in a way that isn't theologically exclusive. Warren just proved that he has less tact and class than about 90% of the clergy of any religion in America.

6. Stop being so negative and hopeless for once
It's just a freaken prayer, something they do every inauguration. It's called tradition. There's more to this day than a prayer.

9. It might do you some good to stop bickering over a prayer. Good grief.
One of the reasons so many of us voted for Obama is because we're sick and tired of the partisan bullshit that's crippled this country for the last 8 years. It was just a prayer. The words from that prayer will have zero relevance in Obama's presidency. You're worrying over nothing.

10. OK
I thought you were being ironic about our last exchange when I thought you were being too negative and partisan. I'm still not sure.

12. Try to put your hostilities aside
just for a day, this day, if it's possible?

This isn't the time to be nitpicking over a prayer for gods sake.

13. What do you see a lack of partisanship as -- allowing hate and bigotry a free pass?
