KO's special comment on prosecuting Bush for torture
"Obama, you must prosecute George W. Bush."

"They are guilty, guilty as sin"

"Prosecute and you will have accomplished good ..."

He took on many of the weasel words that the new administration has been using to leave their options open (my translation in italics).

I wonder if the new administration will be swayed?

2. Very good.
There is a small, informal core group of DUers who are working towards this goal, coordinating efforts with other groups and individuals. Hopefully, more people will become active in this effort.

3. Actions will speak louder than words
I've been critical of some who have harshly criticized the upcoming Obama administration for not showing serious impetus in this matter. This is why I emphasized "leaving their options open" in the O/P. If enough pressure is brought to bear, I believe Obama will give the go ahead to start investigating Bush's torture policy. It's good to hear that there is a group here that is dedicated to applying this pressure - the sooner the better.

4. Yes. If you notice, more and more statements like this are surfacing.
For some reason there was little open criticism. Until now. I have noticed the phrase "war crimes" many times recently.

This was one hell of a comment. We'll have the video posted here shortly.

5. I have held off since it was somewhat pointless until inauguration day

I think Olbermann's timing is good here - tomorrow is day one and now is the time to apply pressure. We cannot get too far along or it will never happen.

Can you post a link to the video here too?

There is a ton of crap to do. A TON. Unemployment will crest 10%. That will trump anything until solved.

9. Why do people continue to say Obama must prosecute??
Obama is not a Prosecutor. Obama is the President. There is a reason for the Department of Justice and there is a reason for Judicial Committees in Congress. Its up to those two departments to do their job. Not Obama

14. I agree that it's not Obama himself that needs to prosecute
I tried to use "the new administration" as much as practical in my post to emphasize precisely what you are pointing out. I have made the same point to others who have pushed this issue and tried to use it as a stick to beat Obama with. It is also true, however, that if Obama wants this done, it will get done.

13. Re-establishing the People's "Independent Council."
Just because Malibu Ken abused the IC, does not mean it was a good idea to allow the Congress to unsurp the peoples only alternative to fair investigations, ending the political BS. We should reinstate it, appoint officials to look at 911, the Iraq War, and the murder & Torture of POWs.

And in this way, no one can say we are slowing down congress & resouces, etc., until their is a reason to convict.

16. I'd still like to see how this is done without implicating the entire Dem leadership.
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 10:41 PM by cottonseed
Of course, this would be a good thing too, but if it were to happen I don't see how it can technically be done. I think we should take some responsibility for this as well. Hell, we keep voting in Feinstein, Pelosi, Harman, Leiberman, Rockefeller, etc.. I want more than anything to see these crimes acknowledged and those responsible held accountable. I just can't get my head around imagining the process.
