I know what I see in Ohio
In Southwest Ohio there are more Kerry signs on lawns than I've ever seen for ANY Democratic presidential candidate ever. I am living in a heavily republican part of the state too.

Work hard and don't be a doom and gloomer, and for God sake don't read much into the last Ohio poll. This poll was conducted by Strategic Vision, a republican leaning polling organization that Kerry has constantly pulled lower than normal numbers. From what I see in Ohio they are full of shit. The state of Ohio lost 200,000 jobs in three years. This has all the makings of a Kerry victory in November if we keep digging.

1. I share your optimism
but the amount of yard signs one sees does not necessarily correlate with winning an election.

8. In Hamilton County it does.
You were lucky to see 25% of the signs you do now, in late October even. Dems aren't as submissive here as they usually are. Kerry won't win this county, even FDR couldn't most of the time, but if every county is as energised as this one there is no doubt we can win.

17. Springfield Township
That's the Finneytown area for those of you who know Cincinnati.

I'm the Ward Chair for Springfield Township and pretty much know where all the hard-core Democrats live. This thing is that I'm seeing Kerry yard signs sprouting all over the place -- and not where I would expect to see them.

Something's going on out there...

18. I've worked on a lot of campaigns
that won the bumper sticker and sign war,but lost the actual vote. Its a reflection of how energized the activists are, but not indicative of how the voters will vote.

3. An Ohio question from an ignorant Illinoisan
Where are the normal hotbeds that vote Repug? Democratic? I don't know the demographics of the state very well, and Ohio is obviously a big state this year. I'd appreciate the feedback, just for my knowledge.

9. i havent lived in ohio in 15 yrs but ill give it a go
so take this with a big grain of salt! i was too young then to know how they divide up but i think this is basically accurate

republican areas tend to be cincinnati, dayton, southern/western ohio. dayton has an air force base i think

cleveland and akron will be more democratic, and columbus has been republican but from what ive seen on this board, they say its balancing out, or even turning a little to democratic

unfortunately as writers have pointed out, that all across the nation there are states and pockets that vote republican even as the repub policies (esp economic of course) have directly hit these states hard

16. N/E Ohio - heavy union population - goes left
Cleveland/Lorain/Elyria have especially been hit hard by the mfg/industry/steel losses and are generally more progressive than most parts of the state when it comes to elected officials. Except for the nouveau-riche WASPish suburbs like Bay Village - mostly repukes. Working class NE Ohio cities, and even on down Akron/Canton/Massilon/Columbus way have lots of Kerry supporters.

It's down in the Southeastuhn and Noahthwestuhn parts of Ah-High-Ah that fuck us all up. These quadrants (for SW - Steubenville, Ironton, Portsmouth, etc, down near Kaintuck and Wes' Verginny; for NW, that's Lima, Toledo, etc) are HEAVY repuke territries. Lots of bumpkin in those areas that either don't care that they're poor or are bible-beater townies that will gladly accept the Chinese shock wave for their Fuhrer.

4. Here in NC, I got my Kerry/Edwards yard sign today!
I was so pissed that my neighbor across the street got her Kerry/Edwards sign before I did!

My neighborhood is full of K/E yard signs.

6. I have only sign on my street!
But this weekend my neighborhood is having a very large Yard Sale. Supposedly one of the largest in the mid-south. We get people from Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee coming to my neighborhood. I will be set up with my laptop in my front yard to register voters.

19. Along the I4 corridor, things are very Kerry
I was on a plane returning from DC to Orlando and struck up a conversation with the gentleman seated next to me. He mentioned that he had some medical difficulties that he had to be hospitalized for last year. I asked if he was a veteran, and did he go to a vets hospital. MAN, did that start an interesting conversation about how bush* has turned his back on the veterans. He is also actively getting out the Dem vote on the Space Coast (his home.)

Damn.

10. Turnout is going to work for Kerry
Record number of voters showed up in the primaries and a great number registered with intentions of firing Bush. Now, are the polls taking these new voters into consideration?

Kerry is going to win this.
