The Parliament of Dreams
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Parliament of Dreams" is an episode from the first season of the science-fiction television series Babylon 5.

<snip>

Jeffrey Sinclair meets an old flame, Catherine Sakai, and rekindles their on-off romantic relationship, before hosting a celebration of Earth religion in which he introduces the major station personnel to a line of people, all of different faiths - the line extends some distance all the way to the final credits.

The Universe speaks in many languages, but only one voice. The language is not Narn, or Human, or Centauri, or Gaim or Minbari.

It speaks in the language of hope; It speaks in the language of trust; It speaks in the language of strength, and the language of compassion.

It is the language of the heart and the language of the soul.

But always, it is the same voice.

It is the voice of our ancestors, speaking through us, And the voice of our inheritors, waiting to be born.

It is the small, still voice that says: We are one. No matter the blood; No matter the skin; No matter the world; No matter the star; We are one.

No matter the pain; No matter the darkness; No matter the loss; No matter the fear; We are one.

Here, gathered together in common cause. we agree to recognize this singular truth, and this singular rule: That we must be kind to one another, because each voice enriches us and ennobles us, and each voice lost diminishes us.

We are the voice of the Universe, the soul of creation, the fire that will light the way to a better future.

We are one.

3. Thank god! I was getting sick of the Clark Administration.
He brought about Homeland Security Night Watch, destroyed our civil liberties, and consorted with evil too great and ancient to comprehend!

15. Here's a question:
I'm not sure which planetary government Bush was trying to emulate. Cheney obviously was trying to emulate Clark, but Bush reminds me more of Centauri Prime's Emperor Cartagia...

20. Bush is the Narn provisional government
I forget the name of the character but I'm thinking of the puppet ruler the Centauri installed after they conquered the Narn Regime. Or maybe Deathwalker except Deathwalker was brighter.

Hell, Zathras was brighter!

33. As B5 is deeper and more nuanced than Star Trek, you have to follow the metaphors, NOT the races.
At times, the Narns were the Bushies.

At other times, the Centauri were the Bushies.

And finally, EarthGov was The Bush Regime.

19. I said that
When I was discussing Bush with a conservative friend (who's also an SF fan), I likened it to Clark's administration as well. The only real difference is the assassination of the previous incumbant.

18. No it was the Human-looking ones
the males all had a friar-tuck bald on top but mega-gelled "fringe" hair that stood up like a fan around the back of the head. Different from the "shell-headed ones". They had their wives chew their food for them & then given to them. It was really gross to me, that's what technology is for, put it in a blender....

24. You're mixing up two races
The ones with the huge fan-like crests of hair were the Centauri. The ones who had their wives chew their food for them were the Ferengi from Star Trek.

9. k & r.
I never followed Babylon 5, but I like what you did here. I've been watching Battlestar Galactica lately. Another DU-er said it was a good metaphor for the experience of living through the Bush years and I can definitely agree with that.

I'll put Babylon 5 on Netflix and think about your posts. It sounds very excellent and like the kind of world I want to live in.

21. Yeeees, come join us!
Word of advice: The first half of season 1 is a little weak (due to Joe having to set up the characters for later on) and much of season 5 is pretty bad (because unlike the rest of the series, it was scripted on the fly).

I'd love to be able to watch the series again. I wonder if it's available somewhere online to watch.

B-)
It's not only one of my favorite Babylon 5 characters, it's a lovely name. :)

Zathras was a great character too and as a name it would be pretty cool if it went with your last name another great character I think was a bit over looked and that I really enjoyed was the Ranger Marcus but that's a more traditional name.

The creator and writers of that show were incredibly talented and they had an amazing crew that pulled it all together.

Anyway, thank you for putting this together. :yourock:

28. So who are the Vorlons in this world?
Which reminds me of a joke, told many years ago on DU and understood by few:

How many Vorlons does it take to screw in a light bulb?

NO.

31. Vorlons aren't meant to be stand-ins for any particular country or ideology.
They're a metaphor.

Well, several metaphors, depending where in the story arc you look.
