This could have been much much worse.

1. Yes, that was a horrific airplane accident.
I will never forget that plane plunging into the icy water, or the stewardesses being plucked from the waters.

2. I was just talking about the Air Florida crash with a buddy one minute ago

We were remembering Lenny Skutnik, the hero of that tragedy, who went in the freezing water to try to save people. The practice (by now actually a tradition) of having real "heroes" in attendance at the State of the Union address started with Lenny. While that practice/tradition has been run somewhat into the ground, if Obama gives a speech to a joint session in his first month in office (as was the case with Bush I, Clinton, and chimpy), I hope he has Captain Sullenberger, the hero of today's near disaster, in the audience so he can get the recognition he so clearly deserves.

One other thought about that horrible day in 1982. What some may not remember (although you will if you were in DC at the time) is that even as rescue efforts were underway from the crash in the potomac, the DC metro (subway) suffered its worst accident, with three people dying and a couple of dozen being injured.

It was a horrible horrible day.

4. My friend and I stayed up last night looking at air crash videos on YouTube.
The last one I looked at was the ValuJet crash that happened in the Florida Everglades.
