January 19 and 20 should be a double Fed. holiday
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 02:04 PM by bambino
It would make sense to celebrate this historic occasion of a having a double holiday 19-20 Jan.
I know half the country don't want to celebrate Obama but it would good at least for all school children to be off to see it. Only some schools have facilites to view the Inauguration. Many people are going to DC or taking the day off. Teachers here are dropping off like flies on Jan 20. I'm not sure if they are going to get the substitutes.

4. If you work for the federal govt, at least in DC
(as well as lots of non federal places in DC) it IS a double holiday.

People who have jobs to go to, like say teachers or nurses or bus drivers really ought to go to work. Yes, an inauguration is important, but isn't your commitment to your job important? Besides, it will be replayed many, many times on all the networks and much of cable, including C-Span.

5. My committment is to my life, not my job,
and I won't be showing up at work until 1:00 - after I've watched the inauguration on TV. Live. Not TIVO'd. No in re-runs. I want to see it as it happens.

It IS that important.

6. Then presumably you don't have a job
such as emergency room doctor or city bus driver or something that would put a burden on others if you didn't show up. Very good. Just be grateful that some others will actually go to work that day. Heck, just think of the news crews in Washington who are going to be far from the Inauguration itself, but will show up to film interviews with some of the thousands who will be along the parade route. And the Metro employees who will show up so the DC transit system will work.

8. Have you heard of vacation days?
We can plan these things ahead of time if we have vacation time.

9. True, and those workers have my sympathy. But that is not what
you originally said. You just said 'if you have a job' then listed a couple critical jobs as qualifications of what you were saying; you didn't say 'if you have a critical job'.

That said, I think anyone who can, without affecting public service, should try to see the inauguration. It is the only time it will happen - and there are not many singular events in the world. There will never again be a first black American president.

Will you be watching?

10. oh, baloney
I'm not a federal worker, but I'm taking the day off, approved in advance, so it's okay with my employer and my committment to my job is strong, but so is my committment to wanting to see history happen as it happens rather than on a CSPAN rerun.
