U.S. rabbis urge Obama to push for immediate Gaza truce

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1055463.html

A group of rabbis and other religious leaders bought advertising space in the New York Times this week to call for U.S. president-elect Barack Obama to push for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

The ad, placed by the Network of Spiritual Progressives and claiming to represent more than 2,800 other religious, cultural and community leaders, urges Obama to convene an international Middle East peace conference to "facilitate a lasting and just settlement for all parties."

1. Bravo!

:applause:

I wish that these groups would also "out" and publicly confront the neocons, in and out of the Bush Administration, who are pushing the Israeli government into these actions! But this is a good start.

5. Not sure what your question is ...
it would seem that merely listing those who are most prominent and stating that the policies they espouse are not acceptable would be a good beginning.

6. I don't see how a bunch of liberal rabbis have special expertise on who the neocons are?

7. You believe that the PNAC website
doesn't provide a few hints?

10. I'm curious as to why you think it's especially incumbent
on them to focus on this.

14. Perhaps not "especiallly incumbent"
but their acting as a group in doing so would have more credibility and authority than doing so singly.

Make no mistake, I am happy with this already.

15. Glad you're happy with it
I think Lerner is great, and he's already done a lot. Just want to point out that it looks like you think Jews have some special obligation re neocons- and not all neocons are Jews, not by a long shot.

11. Then if you can find them on PNAC...
why do you need Rabbi Lerner to 'out' them?

I really don't think Rabbi Lerner has many dealings with PNAC!

13. I'm sure that he doesn't.
He is one of my heroes.

But his voice, together with those of other rabbis, would have more authority than my own. If I raise mine, I am accused of anti-Semitism, merely because I am not Jewish. It is also true, however, that many courageous Jews who have spoken out have been accused of being traitors, as Rabbi Lerner alone has himself been.
