Biden begins last day as senator

Joe Biden's last day in the Senate began much the same as it had in the 36 years that came before.

He arrived at the Wilmington Amtrak station to take the 7:32 a.m. Acela into Washington. He spent a few minutes shooting the breeze with Bob Jones, who runs the shoeshine stand. He picked up a coffee at Primo Cappucino and shook hands with a few patrons who walked up to wish him well.

"Good luck with everything," one said.

"Sen. Biden, keep up the good work, sir," the other said.

The Delaware senator's run as a member of Congress ends at 5 p.m. today, when he officially resigns to become vice president. He and President-elect Barack Obama will stand on the terrace of the U.S. Capitol and take the oath of office on Tuesday.

The vice president-elect's farewell comes the same day as the goodbye of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, who is leaving to become Secretary of State under one-time rival Obama.

Biden used to make his daily commute more or less anonymously. Since he was tapped to be Obama's running mate last summer, however, he has been accompanied by Secret Service agents and police.

1. He's STILL been able to take the train? YAY!
As happy as I am for him to assume the Vice Presidency, I've been sad that he now has to ride around in a very un-Biden like limo. Glad to know he's been taking the train lately, I'd assumed otherwise.

But he still has ONE more train trip yet to take. :)

2. "Acela?" That's the elitist train.
Elitists like to go faster as they are sipping their "Primo Cappucino."

Ah, for the days of regular folk like Dick Cheney. We won't see his kind again.

God willing.

4. He's one good looking dude
and I'd really love to meet him one on one. But then I felt that way about John Edwards and look how that turned out!

Being from Wilmington, I've met Joe several times including once when he stopped by my house
Nice thing about being from a small state is you get to know your elected officials much better.

Joe lives about 5-6 miles from me well until 1/20 when he moves to DC.

8. well I found out that others on my street never got their pictures either
My neighbor, her daughter takes care of my cats when I'm gone, has had several pictures with Joe - seems he does this every year when he does the parade and they showed me their other pictures.

I guess Joe forgot about us this year - they also had a picture taken but never got it.

5. *sigh*
It's a little sad, but it's good too. Our country needs him.

Good luck, Silver Fox....

6. I no longer have one of the most powerful, connected senators in the country
I have Tom Carper, who happens to be DLC elite but that's nothing to brag about.

But I do think that with Ted Kaufman it'll be like we still have Joe in the Senate since Ted was Biden's former Chief of Staff.
