Obama said "Our homeland."
I just heard it on the news. Is there a petition somewhere I could sign to politely ask him to refer to "our country" or "our nation" instead?

Realizing this is the least of our problems. But it's like he caught a Bush cootie.

seriously, I'm with you - the whole homeland security thing was creepy and wrong - we have a department of defense (offense more often), too many national security agencies, state and local police... and our security problems came from our policies OUTSIDE our borders.

All in all, I agree with you. My mother was a war bride from Berlin, Germany, and if she were still alive today, I know the hair on the back of her neck would stand up at the term "Homeland".

I vote for "country", "nation", the US of A, USA, United States of America or simply; America.

Please no leftover Bushisms. They were horrible enough the first time around.

12. He's too young to know the horrors the term brings to mind,
for those of us who were around then. Whenever I hear it I expect them to start carrying on next about der Faterland und Liebensraum.

I go back to the Newsreel News at the movies. Hitler at the podium or on the steps in front of throngs of screaming crazies yelling Heil Hitler, speeches of der Faterland, lengthy footage of the liberation of the concentration camps with the never-to-be forgotten starving bodies, the horror stricken faces of men just laying there like sticks.

...and the slave labor camps - filled in the dual quest for Liebensraum for the Homeland and free labor for the homelanders...

Deutchland Uber Alles!

In my opinion, the Bushie propagandists knew exactly what they were doing, and so did the Bushes themselves. Obama does not.

Someone needs to educate him. Show him some of those old movie Newsreels.

Wat

39. Hardest thing about organizing liberals
They have greater trouble seeing the forest from the trees than our opposition. Its a problem mainly because of intelligence. Its alot easier for us to see nuance than it is for a conservative to see nuance thus we spend time arguing over stupid things like the word Homeland.

31. I despise that term on so many levels.
While there are the clear evocations of the Nazis, it is generally a fascist term with near-xenophobic ( and often racist of a sort) implications. More than that, though, it really is entirely at odds with the United States - psychologically, historically. The implication of the term 'homeland' used in the sense it has been used in the US for the past eight years is that the people are a homogeneous unit(tribe, clan, people, volk) and this land is their 'home,' their site of origin. That this is the exact opposite of what we are ( at our best) or what we have always aspired to be ( when we don't have a collection of 1854 Nativists running the country)is pretty obvious. It simply makes absolutely no sense as a term when seen in light of the country's history.

Even someone as totally insane as Peggy Noonan realizes how nuts this term is when applied to the US.

I do think, though, that Obama has other things to worry about.

I imagine that soon we'll have an extensive list of wholly benign words and phrases not to use anymore for fear of of being allied with "them".

I think "blue skies" should be completely eradicated, 'cause even though it's an absolutely valid descriptor of many Texas afternoons, well, you know... "they" used it and it's now tainted.

(The question may arise-- did I forget to use the sarcasm tag, or was I being serious? It's a weird, weird, weird world...even underneath today's Texas teal tint of the upper and lower atmospheres)

Hmmm...nah...not that important to me.

Personally, I have no problem with Homeland. It has more to do with who uses it and how they are using it.

Moreover, I have ZERO problem with Swastikas - as long as they are being used properly. Millions of Chinese and Indian homes still have those over doorways. Hopefully, the swastika can be reclaimed for its original purpose in a couple of generations.

Sometimes it is context.

BTW...research the history of the swastika before you start flaming this post. It will help you to not have to apologize later.

68. This is our home, this is our land: This Land Is Your Land
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.
