Geithner hearing set for Jan. 21

Republican senators have agreed to a Jan. 21 hearing for Timothy Geithner, President-elect Barack Obama’s pick to run the Treasury.
GOP senators objected earlier this morning to holding a hearing on Friday, but Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus and the panel’s top Republican, Charles Grassley, have agreed to hold the confirmation hearing the day after Inauguration.
This means the controversy over Geithner’s back taxes and his housekeeper's work permit could linger into next week, but at this point Geithner’s nomination does not appear to be in danger.
Democrats and the Obama team have gone into overdrive with their push to come clean on Geithner's "mistakes," but Grassley asked for a few more days to investigate Geithner’s problems with the self employment taxes he failed to pay while an employee at the International Monetary Fund. Geithner has paid all of his back taxes, but a $26,000 chunk of that payoff came right before his nomination papers were sent to the Senate.
Geithner says he was unaware his housekeeper's work permit had expired three months before she left his employment. The housekeeper had proper work permits when she started working for Geithner.
The hearing is now scheduled for Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Dirksen Senate building.
