Did "Buckhead" create the Killian memos AND debunk them?
Thanks to aint_no_life_nowhere for the information on this guy (see below--with link to another great thread).

I was watching Olbermann last night and it hit me-Maybe the debunking of the Killian memos was so swift because the same person who created them not only knew there were going to be questions about them but that he the information at hand to start the questions.

Olbermann was talking to some writer about who could have done this-A sloppy Kerry person/supporter? A mole for Bush who set up CBS and, by association, the Kerry campaign?

Reading about "Buckhead" I could see why CBS/60 Minutes/Rather would say he is a "reputable source". Just a thought.

I'm not saying it's him, but this is a very high profile Republican lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia. He practices in both Washington D.C. and Atlanta. He's the Chairman of the Legal Section in Georgia for Bush-Cheney '04. He's admitted to the 11th Circuit. He went to the University of Georgia (Buckhead quoted a line in one of his posts from a well-known professor at the University or Georgia) and has worked with Newtie, et al.

1. The ratfuck quotient...
Is off the graph in this election. Anything is possible and probable. If he did not create the documents(or create the questioned reproductions that were released to muddy the waters...), he may well know who did, for he could have been tasked as the FUD generator in this affair.

I would suspect that this thing might have its provenance in Brent Bozell's organisation. They are really working the internet these days.

2. The repub smear machine would have been up and running...
before the story aired because the WH had faxed copies of the memos before the show, it would be interesting to know when the WH received them, how much time elapsed between the time the WH received the memos from CBS and when the show aired.

If the WH had hours before the show aired, they could well have had the "forgery" meme ready to go right after the airing.

3. No they had to let Rather hang himself FIRST
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 09:12 AM by underpants
a pre-emptive attack might have caused CBS/Rather to take a longer look and end up not airing them. They had to let them air or else the distraction would have been useless. Notice how little attention is given to what Ben Barnes SAID on the report?

7. Yes, I agree...
I was only saying that the smear machine was up and ready to go with the diversion of "forgery". CBS put 6 weeks of work into this prior to going to air, I believe the memos are genuine and no one has proved, in any way, that they are not.

The forgery meme was for diversion only, imo. It worked for a while but the print media is now starting to focus on the content and are getting documents independent of the CBS documents which adds to CBS's credibility, imo.

15. The fact that RATHER is involved is very telling...
One of the top 3 most hated liberals...

1. John Kerry

2. Jane Fonda

3. Dan Rather

And who get's hurt the most...Not kerry - RATHER takes the brunt...

17. Rather has had extensive experience with the bush revenge tactics...
he knew what he was in for when he started on this as did CBS. Rather went toe to toe with daddy bush re Iran/Contra and earned the hate of the bush cabal for reporting the truth, no surprise there.

4. My guess is that Buckhead knows someone at cbs
that had access to the memos and thats why he could start his debunking so quickly.

5. They haven't been debunked, therefore your theory is highly unlikely.

He said it took him 2 hours to study the papers and write up this thing about how he could reproduce them, with the exception of the signitures, in MS Word on a Lazer Jet printer. He used a lower resolution copy of them to make his determination, even though a higher resolution copy shows irregular typewriter strikes above and below a base line.

The guy is just another (zealot?/well-paid?) propagandist for the GOP. Heck, his law-firm is even hired by the GOP to handle voting fraud cases in the upcoming election.

6. The cry of "Forgery" is somewhat suspicous...
I would expect the documents to be held up to scrutiny as far as their authenticity...claiming forgery would have to be a few steps down the line...

But to come right out with the "forgery" claim...seems a bit bold.

8. It has KKKRove written all over it!
Edited on Tue Sep-14-04 09:58 AM by in_cog_ni_to
Have you seen "Bush's Brain?" KKKRove was working on a Texas election, his guy was behind...BIG TIME...KKKRove all of a sudden finds a "bug" in HIS office and calls the FBI (an agent KKKRove used for all of his dirty tricks)and they called a press conference, blamed it on the opponent and subsequently won the election. Come to find out, the bug had a 6 hour battery. The battery had been used for 2 HOURS! KKKRove bugged his owned office to blame it on his opponent. THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME THING! Create some bogus memos, get them to CBS because you KNOW they will run the story then, SURPRISE! within hours they are found to be forgeries???? SAME THING! He's going to try to blame the Kerry campaign...just watch.

on edit....IF they are found to be forgeries, look at KKKRove. :hi:

9. Could someone fill me in on a piece of this that I've not read anywhere
I doubt if CBS ran with this story if they just received a mysterious envelope slipped under the door (so to speak), had the signature verified and went screamng with it on the air. They would have known that when dealing with photo copies anything could have been cut and pasted and a fake document created. Sooooo, I assume that CBS knows who the person is who gave them the documents and had questioned that person extensively. So, did I miss something?? Do we already know who supplied the documents to CBS?? Again, I would assume that a lot of the credibility CBS gave them was because of who gave them to CBS and I don't think some dude (Buckhead) would be a credible source and, thus, CBS would not have taken the guy's word.

11. Not that I am aware of
They haven't named the source yet, though Novak has called on them to from his highhorse.

THAT could be the turn around on this, show that the whole thing (aside from what Barnes said) was a hoax perpetrated by the White House.

14. Underpants---what I mean is that I doubt if they would have
accepted documents from someone who smelled fishy. For example, this Buckhead, if he is this Atlanta lawyer active in Bush activities, would have been laughed out of the office. Also, someone from the Bush WH would have been laughed at. I have all along thought that this probably came from inside the Pentagon where a lot of leaks have happened because (reported in several big newspapers, news magazines) there is a war going on inside the Pentagon between the brass and the 'civilian bosses' (Rummy, etc.). NOW, it's possible that the WH used one of these boys to set the trap and thought Rather would fall for it. But I still think CBS would have looked very closely at who gave them this info just to prevent being set up.

10. The memos are nowhere near being debunked
The evidence that the memos are genuine has actually grown as various arguments against them have been shot down (the font, the superscript, the signature, etc.).

13. I used"debunked" for brevity
I know that no actual proof has come forward to discredit them but even Olbermann pretty much made it clear that the "conventional wisdom" was that they were not real. I know I know the media and all that, unfortuneately that is where we find ourselves.

12. This nonsense completely fails the "Occam's razor" test
The simplest, and thus most likely, explanation is that (1) the documents are not forged, (2) the Bush White House knew this issue was lurking out there and would eventually break, and (3) Karl Rove had people looking into how to spin the issue before the issue came to light because Rove anticipated the coming shit-storm. Fuckhead came up with as much crap as he could to spin a controversy about the documents, but from what I read, most of his arguments are factually wrong and attack the form of the documents and not the substance of the allegations.

Has there been any new news regarding the curly apostrophes that has not already been debunked?
