What is the ONE THING that Obama could do that would help you the most?
So far, I am lucky but I would want good health care for my unemployed daughter and husband and my grandson, if I were forced to name just one thing. I feel so frustrated at not being able to help them more. My daughter suffers from acute migraines and suffers because she can't afford any more treatment. They are barely getting by and I fear they will lose their house within 6 months if she hasn't found a job.

Hopefully, the stimulus will also provide a good job opportunity for her as well, with adequate child care...

I would charge no more than a 1.5% management fee.

4. Single payer health care
Ensure that everyone can get health care. I'm fine. I work for a non-profit HMO. As long as I have my job, I'll be okay. But, with people losing their jobs, many of our members will lose their coverage. At that point, we'll be in a lot of trouble. If I lose my job, I not only lose my health insurance, but I won't be able to make my house payments. Thanks to Bush's cronies, my mortgage is upside down, so I couldn't sell the house. I'd go under really, really fast.

36. My son is the victim of predatory lending.
He attended the Art Institute here in SF for two years and then transferred elsewhere (only 3 classes were transferable). AI neglected to ferret out federal loans (which we now know he is/was eligible for) and instead saddled him with high interest (12%) private loans. That smooth move is supposed to be illegal.

8. Health care...
It seems that every time I go to my doctor for a checkup, he wants to add something else to my daily regimen of medicines, diet, and exercise.

I almost find myself saying to him what I say to my teen-age daughter: I'm not made of money!

16. Fixing health and dental insurance.
At this point, that is possibly my greatest worry, that if I lose my job, as someone with a chronic illness (Type 1 diabetes), I am uninsurable, and don't have the money out-of-pocket every month to take care of myself appropriately. If we could fix the health care situation, I bet you'd see a lot more small businesses cropping up, too, leading to more localized employment opportunities, as well.

44. Well, since you brought it up...
I meant the Iraq war. But the Afghan war is pretty expensive too. I don't think we can just leave and let the Islamic theocrats replace us. So, I would like to end it, but we have to finish the job we abandoned in 2003 first. Unfortunately, voting for the wrong guy has lasting effects that we cannot just escape from when the idiot finally leaves office.

The so-called drug war should have ended years ago. The damage caused by marijuana is insignificant compared to what we spend trying to stamp it out. Remove that from the law and release those convicted for marijuana crimes. This will free up resources for real threats to public safety.

21. Increase the opportunity for everyone to join the middle class.
The more working and spending people there are the better it is for all of us.

One thing we can do is bring back the manufacturing and the construction sectors. Those industries create jobs of all levels and skills. That would give jobs to many and spending would increase and this economy would have a turn around.

26. I'm retired so I can't afford to pay for their health care. I was so enraged when Bush vetoed
S Chip so my little 4 year old grandson could get health insurance. They have to piece it together for him now thru what programs of the state and locally are out there.

I can never forgive Bush for what he did to my own granchild. Never.

24. Get me a reliable 90k to 100k a year job.
That would be #1.
#2 would be health care benefits.
#3 would be make graduate school affordable so that I could get a grad degree in MBA, law, or engineering and move up the ladder.
#4 would be make home ownership affordable
#5 would be make it possible for me to get out of debt and retire comfortably when I'm 65-70.

25. Universal, single-payer health care...
...this would help almost everyone. First it would mean people without insurance could get the health care they need. Second it would mean that people would stop having to pay huge premiums for substandard insurance that barely covers what is needed, and that the consumer has to fight every step of the way to get even that. Third it would give relief to companies who pay huge amounts of $$ to buy and administer coverage for their employees. Fourth, a consequence of #3, it would help our industries to become competitive again in the global economy.

For my money, that would be the very first big ticket item that could really give a boost to this country.

Emotionally, I want to see a withdrawal from Iraq first. And from a practical standpoint I would like to see military spending cut way back. But universal, single payer health care would still be where I'd start.

It would definitely take Obama's legacy beyond being the first black president, but make him the president who actually did something to significantly help most Americans in the most meaningful and profound way - giving us health care.
