New Yorkers Prefer Andrew Cuomo over Caroline Kennedy 58% to 27%
A new Public Policy Polling survey in New York finds that 44% of respondents have a less favorable opinion of Caroline Kennedy than they did before she began a public campaign for the appointment to replace Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The main beneficiary of the decline in Kennedy's popularity appears to be Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Voters now prefer him for the appointment over Kennedy by a 58% to 27% margin.

Clinton camp derides Caroline Kennedy's bid for US Senate seat
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article5355291.ece

Caroline Kennedy is facing a first test as a politician in her own right from Hillary Clinton's supporters who are opposed to a privileged member of America's foremost political dynasty filling the shoes of the former First Lady in the Senate.

***

Those qualifications are being scorned openly by leading figures from Mrs Clinton's camp, however. Anthony Weiner, a congressman, Stuart Applebaum, a union leader, and Robert Zimmerman, a fundraiser, have all voiced scepticism about Ms Kennedy's candidacy recently. Some have suggested that appointing her would be a slight to Mrs Clinton, who was dismayed by the high-profile endorsement given to Barack Obama by Ms Kennedy, 51, and her uncle, Senator Edward Kennedy, at a crucial stage of the Democratic primary.

***

Critics point out that most of her career has been spent in the type of philanthropic work for education and the arts that might be associated with a minor member of the British Royal Family. Gary Ackerman, a congressman, said that he did not know what credentials Ms Kennedy had for the job “except that she has name recognition - but so does J-Lo.”

The supporters of Ms Kennedy, including the Rev Al Sharpton, the New York civil rights leader, have pointed out that such barbs might have also attached to Mrs Clinton when she stood for the Senate in 2000 on the back of her husband's presidency.

Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 09:19 AM by GB Observer
The bulk of attacks by a couple of Clinton backers happened weeks ago, and these attacks have disappeared as of late. How is it then possible to assume that this poll reflect the attacks if those attacks didn't even hurt Kennedy in previous polls?

50. 'disgruntled Clintonites'? Obama's cabinet is filled with former "Clintonites"LOL!
I'm sorry but that's just too funny. Obama choses Hillary for SOS, & his cabinet is filled with former "Clintonites". Seems some still haven't gotten over the primaries, but obviously Obama has. Isn't it time to put the petty junk away & work together?

As for Caroline, while I'm sure she is a lovely person, but as a politican, she truly sucks. I have no idea what she really stands for, since she doesn't even bother to vote regularily. She doesn't want to disclose her financial worth. I still cannot get over that 200 time "you know" interview. It's mind boggling and embarrassing. You can't blame the "Media" or anyone else for noticing that fiasco. Add to that, she has no personality whatsever and quite frankly I think it takes a lot of gall to ask for an appointment, not get out there and fight for it, just have it handed to her.

We have so many better choices in New York, good people, and they also have proven records of winning in Republican districts. Where Caroline fits in this picture I have no idea. The "Kennedy" name sure didnt help her cousin in Maryland. When Kathleen Kennedy Townsend ran for governor there, she lost & it was the 1st time in 40 years, Maryland wound up with a Republican governor.

We are in the midst of a huge budget crisis, this is not the time for a neophyte, maybe when things settle down, but not now. We really need someone who knows their way around. Cuomo, Suozzi, Maloney, Quinn, McCarthy, I'd feel so much more comfortable with any one of them.

As a New Yorker, I believe the poll. At first it was a novelty, Caroline being considered, but the more she opens up, the more people are starting to dislike her, and I notice now, a lot people are getting downright annoyed. Unlike her cousin RFK Jr, she seems to have nothing but her money & her name to offer and the "I deserve it because I'm a Kennedy" attitude. That's not enough, especially now. The other politicans I've named here may not have the "name" that out of state people recognize, but that doesn't and shouldn't disqualify those who have really fought for NY, and earned their elections, not have it handed to them.

If Caroline wants to run in 2010, so be it. In the meantime she should go to work for her uncle Ted, learn the ropes, get some experience, mix with voters, get to know them, & maybe, a speech coach too. Get herself prepared for a run. Then go out and fight for it.

53. Caroline's opponent in this is Clinton by proxy as manifested by the shit-slinging
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 04:14 AM by AtomicKitten
the Clinton surrogates et al are so proficient at. Clinton surrogates have trash-talked her in the press, and those inclined here at DU have picked it up and carry on in their stead.

Caroline is almost precisely the same candidate as Clinton circa 2000. The same shit you say about Caroline was said about Clinton. Remember that.

Thanks for your 2-centsworth, and btw it was worth every penny ;), but this is up to Governor Paterson alone. He made crystal clear that he does not favor a seat-warmer (although that was a good try by the Clintonites (refer above) desperate to keep this seat out Caroline's hands) and that he understands the importance of seniority in the Senate. He will appoint and there are many, many Democrats that will be delighted if it is Caroline.

54. AtomicKitten Really? Do tell!
Yes the "Clintonites" are so proficent at trash talk that Obama has filled his cabinet with them.

Maybe you should do yourself a favor and watch some videos of Caroline in action. Go check her voting record, for starters. Not to mention, 200 "You knows" in an interview? Catch a view of her trying to avoid the crowds in Harlem. Her handlers kept her under wraps alright, but once they let her "out" she started doing herself in, and that is not the fault of the Media or anyone else. Go listen to this woman try and give a speech, boring as hell. As an "appointee" that might work, but as a real candidate running for office? She'd wind up like her cousin in Maryland and sorry I don't want to see that in NY.

Caroline is precisely the same candidate as Clinton was? yeah, right. Hillary earned her seat. She didn't walk into NY and ask anyone to hand it to her. She visited all 62 counties of NY, she debated her opponets, she actually ran for office. She was elected twice by the voters. And dont give me .."Well it's New York" We had to put up with Rudy & Pataki for years. So yeah, I think Hillary "earned" it. Caroline? She asked for it...period.

And dont even get me started on Hillary's qualifications before she ran for office versus Caroline's. There is no comparison. Read for yourself: http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h2044.html

I think as a voter in NY, my opinion is worth more than two cents. But be that as it may, I know I'm not the only NY'er that feels that way and more agree with me than you.

But you are correct, it is up to Gov Paterson and let us not forget he wasn't elected either. But whatever he decides, thats the way it will be, but in the meantime, since it is our state we have a right to express how we feel, whether you like it or not. We pay the taxes and if we think someone more qualified deserves the position, we have every right to say it. You don't like it? Too bad.

But to blame others for Caroline's failings is a sham. I dont see why the "Clintonites" are sooooooooo desperate to hold onto Hillary's seat, after all Caroline is suppose to be a Democrat same as Hillary, isn't she? Doesn't appear Obama is holding a grudge against Hillary for running against him...does it? Obama's cabinet is filled with "Clintonites", he does seem too mad at them..does he? And if you think being nominated for Secy of State is an "insult"...I think you have a real problem.

Something you should be aware of, while you sit around holding grudges and hate, politicans don't. They socialize, they go to each other houses, out to dinner, to parties, their wives and children know and like one another. They vote for each others bills, they speak well of each other ( how many times had Biden referred to John Mc Cain as a "good friend"? Or Obama referring to Mc Cain as a "man who deserves our respect, a true hero"? ) They all do it and yes while they fight during elections, once its over they go right back to getting along. The "hate" is left to people like you, you hold the grudge while they could care less.

It sure motivates you to vote, but that's all it gets you. Politicians go on their merry way. They have to, otherwise nothing will ever get done. Quite frankly I'd love to see Christine Quinn as the 1st gay senator from NY and not just because she's gay, but because she has earned it. And I think it's long overdue. And so have so many others. Truly "Earned it" Not have it "Handed to them".

55. Your mean-spirited monologue is exactly what I'm talking about.
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 06:05 AM by AtomicKitten
Your bent is exactly that faction I speak of. It is so transparent. The Clintons have been nothing but an embarrassment to this party from Bill's impeachment for having sex with a young intern in the White House all the way to Hillary's embarrassing exposure on national TV for lying about her "experience" to her hawkishness that made many Democrats cringe. There's nothing there there.

Caroline Kennedy has led her life honorably with philanthropic and humanitarian work and as an ardent supporter of the arts. But what is it that invokes such venom? What could it be? Oh, that's right. She had the nerve to support Barack Obama. Her surrogates haven't been shy about that on TV, in print, and on the radio, and the snarl flows downhill as you so aptly demonstrated.

Your mean-spirited disrespect, this time for Caroline Kennedy, and the distorted narrative about who the Clintons are is indicative of the distinct faction I referenced above that bears no resemblance to the Democratic Party I signed up for. And the struggle for the soul of the party continues. And although Obama has called upon some former Clinton admin personnel to serve and hired Hillary to keep her pissing out of the tent instead of in like she is inclined to do (plus neutralized her for 2012), he won, and the party will move forward on his terms.

Obama supports Caroline Kennedy. We'll see who holds sway.

Very well said. Though I'm not so sure about Quinn, I'm not happy that she went along with Bloomberg's decision to run for another term. Why should Bloomberg get away with something that was previously denied to Giuliani (thank goodness for that near miss)?

As for the Clintonites in Obama's transition team and cabinet, who else would he hire? Obviously many people from the last Democratic administration, much to the chagrin of the left that eviscerated both Clintons during the primaries. Oh, sometimes life is way too funny.......

34. Now, MARIO Cuomo . . .
. . . is the one I'd love to see in that seat.

(Not gonna happen, I know, but still . . . )

I'd prefer to have seen him on the SCOTUS, but it's a little too late now.

64. agreed; Andrew's claim to fame is being an ineffective surrogate
The Hillary campaign might have their own surrogate with foot-in-mouth syndrome who they'll have to deal with. During an appearance yesterday on talk radio -- at almost the same time as Obama co-chair Jesse Jackson Jr. questioned Hillary's tears -- New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo used some words about Barack Obama that have a very troublesome racial history.

"It's not a TV crazed race. Frankly you can't buy your way into it," Cuomo said, according to Albany Times Union reporter Rick Karlin. "You can't shuck and jive at a press conference," he added. "All those moves you can make with the press don't work when you're in someone's living room."

(as seen on http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4032525)

In fairness to the Clintonmites, Jesse Jr. also belongs in the aforementioned category, and he probably won't be Senator either. I'm not a big Caroline fan but I'd rather have Edith Bunker than Archie, plus the Hillary seal of approval can't be worth that much in NY these days, maybe a free handbag with purchase.

39. Caroline is OK with me, but Cuomo is a big pile of 'meh'
He's boring. To the beltway journalists, he's been the supposed 'next big thing' in politics longer than i can remember. If he hasn't clicked with voters by now, it aint gonna happen.

He's kind of like the Democratic version of Michael Steele or Lamar Alexander

44. don't believe the hype
Some were saying that she would be this great voice for New York. I'm not from New York, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want someone who interviews like that to be the public face of my state. She may be smart, she may be liberal, but being a smart liberal doesn't make you qualified for the big time politicking that comes with a Senate seat. Caroline "ya know" Kennedy just isn't ready for the prime time.

45. I have no idea on her yet - no one does
She may be great, she may stink. Who knows?

but I already know that Cuomo is as uninspiring as they come and pretty damn DLC.

If not Caroline, then it's him?
Is there athird option?

63. Sure there is and they are all women:
Maloney, Lowey, Velazquez and Quinn. Maloney would be my first choice. Kennedy? Not at all........

48. So does Newt Gingrich
In fact, I can't think of many legislators that were more effective.

If "effective" is what you want...

58. Andrew Cuomo is a joke...
especially since that comment he made during the campaign about Pres. Obama, he referred to him as "shucking and jiving", a clearly racist comment.

Haven't there been reports that Hillary Clinton would prefer a woman to take her seat? I had heard that a couple times.

65. Other polls have Caroline ahead, but polls don't matter because Gov. Patterson has the only vote.

66. I still don't understand why Clinton supporters are so up in arms over this.
I find it particularly amusing when they bemoan Hillary Caroline getting the seat due a famous last name, rather than years of concrete experience.
