Follow it here http://www.theuptake.org/

If you have been following the process you know how above board this has been done and all that is left is BS from Coleman.

They can cry all they want but we have Senator Franken and there shouldn't be any reason he isn't sworn in on Tuesday.

107. Repubs vow to filibuster Al Franken's confirmation and Sen. Reid is reaching out to Repubs
to block the Burris confirmation. They can still cut a deal and stop Franken if the Repubs will agree to vote against confirming Roland Burris.

Until Al Franken is sworn in, I won't believe it's a done deal.

Coleman to challenge

Coleman doesn't appear to get it. Now that the Dem candidate won there'll be no more recounts. It's over. He should know that's how this game is played. Count and recount until the Dems win.

There are still 129 ballots that were counted twice, making it appear they got lost between election night and recount day for that precinct. They were referred to as the 133 lost ballots, I think.

Also from cqpolitics, technical knock out punch:

At issue is the number of rejected absentee ballots under consideration. The counties came up with a list of 1,346 absentee ballots they believe had been wrongly rejected. The Coleman campaign wanted another 645 ballots added to that lsit, but was rebuffed after the Secretary of State’s office decided Coleman attorneys did not submit their list in time.

Both the Minnesota secretary of state, a Democrat, and the Franken campaign dismissed the Coleman effort as a last-ditch attempt to change the rules of the game.

Franken is a liberal in a wildly liberal state with wildly liberal judges and election officals. His win was AUTOMATICALLY guaranteed.

When Al Franken, who has absolutely no political or executive experience, becomes a US senator its officially the end of America.

Minnesota has actually managed to replace Illinois as the laughing stock of the country. Well done and I hope you’re proud.

Franken takes 225-vote lead in Minn. recount
56 minutes ago

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Victory in Minnesota's drawn-out Senate race has moved within Democrat Al Franken's grasp as he pushes his lead over Republican Norm Coleman to 225 votes with the two-month recount all but complete.

Unless Coleman wins a pending court petition that seeks to add hundreds more ballots to the recount, the counting is done and a state board can sign off on the result Monday or Tuesday. The result cannot be certified for at least one more week under state law.

Coleman's term as senator officially expired Saturday.

Franken netted 176 votes more than Coleman on Saturday in a review of the formerly sealed absentee ballots after coming in with a 49-vote advantage at the end of the statewide recount. The ballots didn't get counted on Election Day.

79. "I don’t know how they could have rigged a bipartisan canvassing board..." Oh no, they're onto us!
We triggered the liberal sleeper agent reflex in Tim Pawlenty's head and ordered him to appoint his own handpicked judges who had been posing as Republicans for their entire lives, just so they could one day hand an election to a DFL Senator!!!!

Granted for all that work we probably could have just hypnotized Coleman into dropping out, but we had to do things the hard way.

Mark Ritchie has said that the canvassing board will declare a winner on Monday, and while he refuses to say who that winner will be the numbers make it pretty obvious. Once the canvassing board declares Franken the winner you will hear his victory speech, and you will hear Coleman throw a hissyfit and tell us about all the frivolous lawsuits he will be filing.

20. not official until the Secretary of State has certified it

Coleman will challenge a bunch of issues but they have all been addressed by the MN Supreme Court and the process of counting all the ballots has been so transparent it is hard to see where he would get 223 votes. He isn't even claiming that many double votes - which he can't prove and will not win on.

97. Not all of them...
The Supreme Court made a really bad decision that allowed the candidates veto power over whether the improperly rejected absentee ballots should be counted, as a result about 400 votes that should have been counted were not counted. These votes would have likely gone in Franken's direction though, and even if they were to go in Coleman's direction they would not provide anywhere close to enough of a net gain to change these results.

Edited on Sat Jan-03-09 11:51 PM by dflprincess
if Normie files a lawsuit state law prevents the Secretary of State from certifying the election. That is why they're reporting that the canvassing board will announce the final totals of the recount Monday or Tuesday. Our now former Senator Weasel (his term expired at noon today) has 7 days to file his lawsuit. If he does not, then the election may be certified.

47. Brilliant
It was of course caused by fraud. The fraud being that all the votres were counted and therefore that should not happen in a Republican owned democracy. Votes should only be counted until such point that Repugs win. Anything else is fraud.

Ooh - I can not wait to wind up Repug and PUMA bigots.

Congrats Al. You must have no nails left, but you deserved this.

48. K&R I loved this recount!
From the very beginning the Democrats have set the gold standard on how a race should be contested. (With much thanks to the awesome Minnesota election laws that were already in place.)

1. Transparency.

Mark Ritchie put every single second of every canvassing board meeting available to anyone who wanted to see it. Worldwide.

2. Fund Raising.

Expenses for a clean recount are expensive and Al Franken hit the ground running with a large fund-raising effort.

3. Media Availability.

Contacts with the Al Franken campaign were readily available for anyone who would listen. Thanks to this, most people knew all along how the ballot challenges would fall. When the Franken campaign said that they would end up ahead after the canvassing board resolved the challenges, they weren't blowing smoke. They ended up very close to the actual result.

73. He's going straight to the state Supreme Court and they will
hear his complaint (known outside of courtrooms as whine) fairly quickly. Though, I would guess he'd take it to the Federal courts if the state rules against him. That might take longer, though with Minnesota now short a senator they may expedite the hearings.

of a future in Minnesota politics, he'd better give up now. I don't think his dragging this out will go over well with the voters - especially if the court finds in Franken's favor (though you know if the state Supreme Court rules against him, Norm will go federal). Let's all remember Senator Weasel on November 5 saying it was up to Franken if he wanted to cost the taxpayer's money by letting the legally mandated recount go forward.

I'm assuming sooner or later the Secretary of State's office will have to defend how the recount was handled so I imagine litigation is going to cost us a lot more - as well as wasting the court's time.

78. Was the "landslide" a sarcastic remark?
If Franken had won by a "landslide" no recount would have been necessary. Yes, he did win, and I'm happy for him, but he had better realize that he did so by fingernails. He had better be a senator who proves he's worthy of the office, and prove it to a lot of the people who didn't vote for him.

In his next election, if Coleman or whoever runs against him gets a fifth of Franken's votes, THEN you can talk about landslide.

But there are no serious issues left to litigate or ballots left to count

any more recounting will have to be done on Coleman's dime and it will be very expensive.

Also because of the very transparent way in which it was done that 225 vote lead looks huge,

95. I don't think the Republicans will be able to filibuster his seating...
That is unless they want to suffer some serious blowback. It is going to be very obvious that Franken won, and the lawsuits Coleman is considering are either completely frivolous or would not gain him enough votes to overturn Franken's margin if he won. I think people across the country, and Minnesotans in particular would be furious if they denied an elected Senator a seat based on some frivolous lawsuits.

120. no
first step canvassing board certifies the vote count

then the loser has 7 days to file a law suit

if no law suit has been brought in 7 days then it can be certified.

But the ball is in Coleman's court and he has to have 2 things 1) a reasonable argument that would indicate that he can get back 225 votes and 2) the money for a recount - its all been free up to now.

Because of the way that Minnesota conducts their recount, no provisional ballots and all challenged ballots on the internet, it would be hard to see how Coleman could get that many votes, he also has to consider his own reputation for future MN political races.

He also made a statement on election night urging Franken not to contest and put MN through unnecessary fruitless litigation - which is what he is now facing.

Intrade now has Franken 95
