Blago presents us with three evils. Pick one.
Edited on Thu Jan-01-09 03:35 PM by tinrobot
I personally don't like any of these choices, but the bottom line is that we need to pick one.

Evil #1 - We seat Burris, even though every important Democrat has come out against an appointment by Blago. The evil here is that we get egg on our face. The positive side is that we keep the seat until 2010.

Evil #2 - The seat goes vacant. The evil here is that the Democrats have one less vote, giving the GOP more power. The positive side is that we save face.

Evil #3 - The seat goes up for a popular vote. This gives the GOP an opportunity to win/steal the seat for themselves, again giving them more power. It also gives the GOP a platform to create a referendum on Obama. Positive side happens if we win the seat back, but again, the seat goes vacant for a long time.

Looking at the bigger picture, I want as many Senate seats as possible going into this critical time. The next few months are very important to the future of this country. I also do not want to give the GOP any more power or opportunities than they already have. We have a safe seat, let's just keep it and suffer some embarrassment. The embarrassment will fade, but the extra vote we gain will endure.

Of course, I'm a pragmatist, not a politician.

2. I think there will be disagreement with any route we choose, but I'm with you
in that -- bottom line -- I want that Senate seat. Egg on their faces never stopped the Republicans.

Someone else makes the appointment, which makes #2 invalid in the long term (if one can call a couple of months long-term).

But can we wait a few months is the question...

5. #1.5: Get Burris to submit to a hearing with the Il. legislature resulting in a >>>
vote of confidence if they're satisfied there's nothing hinky going on.

6. Blago is a crook, and Burris is a douche bag
The story about Burris trying to send to the gallows an innocent man took the cake for me.

We have a lot of important stuff to get done in the Senate. Let's have as many Dems there as possible, and quickly.

9. #3. The GOP won't win it. Better to be a clean party than to
legitimize corruption because it helps us in the short term.
