Sarcasm
Edited on Mon Dec-22-08 06:59 PM by firedupdem
I think it's really unfortunate when people need to mock, under the guise of "sarcasm" the struggles of one people to emphasize injustice anywhere. I wonder if the white people who marched with Dr. King and worked on the front lines in our struggle for equality were ever made fun of or joked about under the guise of "sarcasm".

Do you think that the white people that worked to ensure equal rights for all americans, not just black people were ever made to feel guilty about their own freedoms? Somehow I think Dr. King and others were appreciative of their work and didn't use their right to marry each other or drink from a certain water fountain or ride in a certain section of the bus against them.

Some hurts are still raw and still sting even under the guise of "sarcasm."

I would hope that we on this board could do better at working together and supporting each other instead of pulling each other apart....even under the guise of "sarcasm".

3. even if they did, would mocking that group further the cause?
What good does that do here? Being a member here requires that you support equal rights for all people. Who are you trying to reach by mocking another group? I don't think the people you want to reach with those analogies are here on this forum. It offends some of us that are in support of the rights of all people.

6. Were it axiomatic that all...
"the struggles of one people to emphasize injustice anywhere" were virtuous, you'd have a point. Some expressions are born of the hurt you describe and miss the mark, irrespective of the figure of speech utilized. In times of stress a mass of such expressions can be akin to an Olympic event to dive under the bus via all manner of figures of speech. Effective responses to these expressions may in turn utilize further figures of speech to illicit positive effects, which can in turn miss the mark. We're not all perfect MLKs, as if he ever was, and never will be.

I would hope that we on this board could do better at working together and supporting each other instead of pulling each other apart...

As do I. Problem is, this board is host of discussion of events on both an emotional/community and cold hard political levels. These can be difficult to negotiate during times of stress as some are in no mood to deal with both levels and discussions of political exigencies are perceived as attacks. Despite being in perfect agreement on the issues, in the last few daze I've been repeatedly called a bigot, purveyor of 'Warren' talking points and Obama sycophant over tactical political differences. But alas, I heed the rule to "Have a thick skin" and do not seek to censor or ostracize those with whom I disagree, excuse them the excesses of their passion and hope others would do the same as our causes are greater than our differences.
