5. I find the picture FASCINATING on a number of levels. I think it is pretty good, too.
I like the fabric of the shirt, the light, the background....ignore the subject and what a putz he's been for the last eight years--the composition is very interesting. Really. And they didn't pretty him up--look at the neck. It's very ... unguarded.

Pity he didn't put as much thought into foreign policy as he did picking a portrait painter. We may have been all right if he had.

What's odd, though, is how this photograph of GWB looking at himself makes it look like LIVE BUSH is checking out PAINTED BUSH's ...er .... package.

18. Well, that's what is great about art. It's very subjective.
I thought that the offensive fabric that Cristo hung in Central Park a few years back was pure shit. Someone here almost burst a blood vessel telling me what an asshole I was for having that opinon. It didn't change my mind though. I just dug in.

I won't do that to you--beat you up for your dislike. IF you don't like it, you don't like it. It's art, not ice cream (though you don't HAVE to like that either--all the more for the rest of us).

I think it's a fascinating work. The subject matter is quite a tool, but as a painting, I like the colors, the combinations, and the use of light. It IS a turning point in the way portraits will be done in future.

29. The workmanship is phenominal
The light, like you mentioned, is incredibly well done - especially the reflection on the watch. And the photorealism of the work is among the best I have ever seen from a modern artist. The painter has effectively captured Bush, I think, in his physical mannerisms - the way he never seems to know what to do with his arms, for instance, and the phony smile he puts on when he tries to look like an average, likable person.

The fabric looks real, and the spatial realization is perfect - the placement of the figure with the couch and the background, not to mention the proportions. The colour was also done very well - the entire piece is far better than the other portrait done of him.

Kudos to whomever on his staff picked out this guy - I don't think Bush did; if he had, it would probably be a crayon drawing of the Occupant as a cowboy.

33. I think the guy went to SCHOOL with Bush.
I don't know if Bush thought up the idea of asking him to do it, but I agree with your analysis of the work.

This marks a change in "official" portraits--and the irony is, Bush was the guy who made such a big deal of going to work every day with his coat and tie on (in the Oval Office, anyway) to make the point that HE wasn't getting blowjobs there.... and here's his official portrait--the first one, ever, in shirtsleeves. Ah, the irony, it is surely lost on him!

I don't much like the subject as a person, but I do think, as you noted, the picture captures his essence. I'd love to be able to see the thing up close; maybe I'll get a shot if I start up going back to DC again.

37. Oh, same here.
I'd love to see all the official portraits in person. As it is now, I've only ever seen pictures - and one cannot make a truly accurate critique, I believe, without seeing the work in person.

38. I agree
He looks like an unprofessional idiot in the painting and was an unprofessional idiot in real life. Seems like the painter really captured the subject.

Isn't this extremely casual for a Presidential portrait????

Why isn't he wearing a suit?

Maybe there should be a chainsaw in there instead of a vase! LOL

11. Yea, a "regular guy" complete with multi-millionairre heritage.
Ya know, if left alone, he probably would have liked to be "just one of the guys" & might have been tolerable. But those evil, wealthy families insist.....eldest son must carry the water.

That's the extent of my sympathy for *! I'd settle for him going to The Hague.

I will NEVER go to TX again, even to throw shoes. What an armpit state! It has NO redeeming qualities as far as I'm concerned.

24. When he was left alone he was a smirking mama's boy frat boy
who liked to burn his 'brother' Skull and Boner's with a makeshift brand made out of coat hangers as an initiation. He also blew up frogs, drove drunk, took copious drugs and avoided the draft.

Had he been born into a less prominent family he would have died a meth addict years ago, or spent a good chunk of his life behind bars or been the town fool as well as the town drunk.

I don't know why these portraits were done, but the official presidential portrait that will hang in the WH won't be done until after he leaves.

15. Dubya is looking at his crossed fingers. I can't tell if the fingers look like a swastika or
the Cross of Lorraine. Here's a couple of uses of the Cross of Lorraine from Wikipedia:

"The Lorraine cross was carried to the Crusades by the original Knights Templar, granted to them for their use by the Patriarch of Jerusalem."

"The Lorraine Cross is used in Freemasonry as a degree symbol."

21. I believe the artist is trying to say something.
A vase is more useful than the piece of shit that ran this country into the ground for 8 solid years. A vase can be useful for holding flowers or just some greenery. Meanwhile, Bush is so useless, the green couch holds him and serves a purpose too. Bush, himself, however, serves no purpose except to turn everything he touches into shit.

Either that, or all that green in the picture denotes all the money the bastard stole while he lavished his already rich friends with all the country's money.

25. The vase is so there's somthing interesting in the painting
The artist felt the need to put flowers and a vase in a strange place close to Bush's head so people could have a reaction that didn't end with puke all over the portrait.

And Bush is being told "What? You haven't put gays in concentration camps yet? You haven't completely destroyed the economy yet? Why did I give you the Presidency if you can't fulfill my orders? Now I have to undermine Obama with anti-gay rumors, so that I can put somebody loyal to me in the White House. Somebody like...Rush Limbaugh. Thanks a lot, George. Drink yourself to death.
