Here is the letter I just sent to Change.gov. It might not change anything but it makes me feel a tiny bit better:



Dear Team,

I'm sure by now you have received several messages about the decision to include Pastor Rick in the Inauguration. I am writing to add my voice to protest his role in this ceremony.

Not only does his presence chill the message of equality that you are trying to send across the nation, it also emboldens those who feel they can legislate from the pulpit.

Rick Warren chose to support Proposition 8 in California. This Proposition stripped rights away from citizens in this state. He has stated that he supported this measure on the grounds of the First Amendment. Warren feels that granting equal human rights somehow violates the right to free speech for churches.

This doesn't make any sense.

However, he used his power to effect the lives of thousands of citizens of my state. I fail to see how his presence builds a bridge across the aisle. I always assumed the Republicans also wanted the Constitution to stay more or less intact.

I wish you would reconsider this.

You have sent a message of hope to this nation and I was powerfully moved the morning of our victory. I know and realize that many issues are going to be addressed in your administration and I am excited to see what you will accomplish going forward.

But is was also my hope that "dumb as a bag of hammers" was going to be a voice that we all heard a little less of in the next 4-8 years of your Presidency.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to write to you, and I hope you will take up the issue of equal human rights for all Americans in the new year.

People are more likely to respond and consider rational points. I honestly don't think writing a letter comparing Rick Warren to Nazis or the KKK is really helpful.

I hoped to frame it in a way that might get read. Much as I would love to foam at the mouth a bit to Change.gov I've dealt with enough bureaucrats that I know the code. The dumb as a bag of hammers bit was a tad self indulgent, but maybe Biden will read it. I think he'd get a laugh out of it.

Mine was similar in tying working on a political issue while preaching at the pulpit.....and that it should not be encouraged....and this choice does.
