Dueling statements-LA Gay & Lesbian Center vs Rick Warren
Now, a few minutes ago the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center issued a statement under the name of chief of staff Darrel Cummings calling on the president-elect to disinvite Warren, who supported Prop. 8 on the Nov. 4 ballot, which passed and bans same-sex marriage.

Cummings' statement said:

"If President-elect Obama does not disinvite Rick Warren, then he is defining what inclusion in America will mean under his administration. It will mean that the practice of bigotry is acceptable, and that as president — in the name of 'inclusion' — he will provide a place and platform for that bigotry to be expressed and grow.

"Apparently we are welcome into the big tent of hope, but if we choose to enter, we should do so knowing we are in hostile, yet 'balanced' territory.”

At almost the same time, Warren issued a brief statement too. It said:

"I commend President-elect Obama for his courage to willingly take enormous heat from his base by inviting someone like me, with whom he doesn’t agree on every issue, to offer the Invocation at his historic Inaugural ceremony.

"Hopefully individuals passionately expressing opinions from the left and the right will recognize that both of us have shown a commitment to model civility in America.

"The Bible admonishes us to pray for our leaders. I am honored by this opportunity to pray God’s blessing on the office of the President and its current and future inhabitant, asking the Lord to provide wisdom to America’s leaders during this critical time in our nation’s history."

1. What The Hell Does Civility Have To do With Bigotry, Discrimination, And Racism?
I though Jesus taught tolerance.

Isn't Warren the antithesis of tolerance.

Sometimes one cannot have it both ways!

2. I'm not aware of any example where Christ taught tolerance.....
.... he taught love. Not the same thing.

He taught us to love our enemies. Which is rarely easy.

As we are seeing here tonight (and yesterday and prob. tomorrow too)

3. Does Not Love Equate To Tolerance In Most Instances?
Hard for one to see the distinction on the Warren vs GLBT community vs human rights issue.

4. Here's how the fundies see it:
If your kids are throwing baseballs through the windows of the school, you don't tolerate it and you have to punish them. When you punish them, you still love them, even as you whip their asses. Tolerance is not the same as love.

6. Ok - I Get How The Fundies See It - Not The Way I See It - So be It
I don't often agree with fundies anyway.

5. Sadly no .....
Tolerance means "to put up with."

If you are a member of the GLBT community, do you want to be "put up with" or do you want people to love you as a fellow human being and repsect your beliefs and rights even when they disagree with you?

It's a two way street.

That sucks sometimes, but that's the way it is.

11. Love does not equal respect, either.
Those "good" Christians may profess their love of the gay, but they certainly do not respect it, or much else for that matter.

8. When did "Love" grow to include lying about a minority to deprive them of civil rights?

9. Probably at the same time it grew to include.....
..... loving people who imprisoned you, beat you and brutally murdered you.

You know ...... like on a cross.

Like I said, it sucks sometimes, but it's all right there. Need scripture?

10. Sorry, but did you understand me?
I didn't ask when did love grow to include loving those who lie about you.

I asked when did love grow to include doing the lying.
