you reach out to people you disagree with to have an influence on their beliefs, much more than you would have from returning the hate with some of your own.

59. You are the one making the bold claim not me...
The burden of proving he didn't exist is STILL on you since you made the claim... I made no such claim, I just pointed out how silly your claim was because of the fact that it wasn't really proveable.

Secondly you are creating a straw man by conflating a literal interpretation of Genesis which I never espoused here nor do I believe with the notion of whether there was a historical figure who was what some people call "Jesus" today...

It is indeed quite possible that there was a historical "Jesus" that did exist who was a rabble rouser / revolutionary type 2000 years ago leaving aside "supernatural" considerations. Do you think that various people just made up these stories for no particular reason? Usually there is some kernel of truth behind legends. Of course they are always embellished.. We see it in our own history - George Washington and the Cherry Tree, Abe Lincoln splitting logs, etc., etc....

That speech was given by His cousin John The Baptist. And then afterwards, Jesus' Dad had a few words.

John said "Behold the Lamb of God who taketh away the sins of the world"

God said "This is My beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased"

Short and to the point. And neither one said "Oh yeah... make sure the gays don't get married!!!!"

86. The Jesus in the bible is mythological
Was there a real preacher around 33 AD that pissed off the Romans there is a 99% probablility. Was he born in a manger, the son of God, had super powers, and now sits at the right hand of the father is mythology in my opinion.

So saying he was a mythological figure is an accurate statement.

There was probably a real King Arthur as well but he isn't asleep and he isn't coming back to lead Brittain again.

an honored position?

78. You are taking the analogy too far, I am saying that it is wise, you have more influence
reaching out to those you oppose than you do calling them a bigot. Where do you think hate comes from? An evil pool of demons? It comes from ignorance and fear, none of which you can develop counter strategies for by trading insults.

81. I see - when your analogy gets explored a bit and falls on its ass, it's "too far".
He's not reaching out - he's HONORING this bigot.

If you want to look to Jesus's example, this isn't it.

88. I'm not emotional at all. That's an ad hominem. I'm simply exposing the flaw in your analogy.
Jesus didn't do anything like the parallel you're trying to draw.

I had plenty of years of Catholic education. You don't know WTF you're talking about.

refuse to address. I have been making it here all night. Can you influence anyone without their rapport? If so how effective is it?

92. I've addressed your point, as have others. If Obama wants to influence Warren by
bringing him in and swaying him, great.

But that's not what he's doing.

If he wants to influence people, why is it always homophobes and not racists? Why not invite a racist to deliver the invocation?

You know why and so do I.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 11:57 PM by usregimechange
those who perpetuate this hate will be swayed by a leader who leads effectively. This is a strategic move and one that will help us get closer to equal treatment under the law. People listen poorly to those they perceive as enemies. I suspect that will be clear when they are all listening in to what Obama has to say.

51. You just don't get it. It's not that he is invited to dinner, to sit down and meet or discuss issues
Rich Warren was chosen to be the religious leader of choice for the event. He is apparently the most important religious to the Obama team. Many of us consider it a slap in the face to those of us that put in a lot of work, sweat and money to elect Obama. If Obama wanted to include Warren on a committee to discuss religious differences in the country, that's one thing. This is quite another. And I don't think it very friendly for those that aren't offended to tell those that are offended that we shouldn't be offended.

more than those of us here calling them bigots will ever do. "Oh, they called me a Bigot, maybe I am." Not a thought you will hear anytime soon.

117. I agree that we should try to "influence" the bigots, if you will, but I think there would be
better ways. This way makes it look like Obama is endorsing Mr. Warren and his bigoted beliefs.

I appreciate your decent response. I didn't intend my comment to be quite so snarky.

And, there is nothing Christ like about picking Rick Warren for misguided political expediency. You don't offer up a minority community as a sacrificial lamb for 'unity'.

This is probably the most ridiculous off-based post I have seen yet.
