condescending vanilla defensiveness. Pretty disappointing.
If this is his strategy for promoting inclusiveness, maybe he's a little greener than I thought. The nativity is striking. Maybe he can still book Rodney King to stand up and plead "can't we all just get along."
"I'll just bring in a rightie and a leftie and everyone will be happy. Afterall, I'll have all of the bases covered. So what if the rightie has just successfully campaigned to strip some of the lefties of their constitutional rights. They'll overlook that because they love me. I'm being inclusive. Everyone will understand that. Especially during this great day of celebration."
Wow, just wow. He's needs some advice from a very good sociologist. Because this was not him at his best. S/he can teach him about genuinely reaching out and getting buy-in and demonstrating empathy and timing and picking the right place and promoting dialogue. Maybe s/he can throw in a lesson about why bigotry hurts and causes resentment and resistance to acceptance. And why establishing trust is really important when approaching really sensitive matters.
This is one of the most clumsy things I've ever seen from him. I'm really quite surprised, maybe stunned is not too strong of a word.
