For a vacancy that currently does not exist, the anticipated open seat in Texas (Kay Bailey Hutchison is expected to resign at some point in 2009 to run for Governor) sure is drawing a lot of entrants.

Another day, another announcement for the U.S. Senate.

This time the candidate is Michael Williams, the Republican Chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission who was re-elected last month.

Williams, one of the most prominent African-American Republicans in the nation, released a statement announcing his candidacy.

Needless to say, Republicans are thrilled at the prospect of electing a black Republican to the U.S. Senate. It's part of the reason they love Michael Steele so much. Williams is a big recruit, and ought to be one of the frontrunners for the Republican nomination.

He won't be alone, though. The two Democrats considered the best positioned for statewide runs - John Sharp and Bill White - are already in the race, and state senator Leticia Van de Putte may join them.

On the Republican side, there are at least three other candidates already in the race, and Rep. Kay Granger may be joining them.

For pure political spectacle, the Texas Senate Race That Officially Doesn't Exist is shaping up to be one of the best of the next cycle.

2. Cornyn WANTS his CRONY Texas AG Greg Abbott
Attorney General Greg Abbott is considering entering the rapidly crowding field to succeed U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, according to a story published this afternoon by the Congressional newspaper Roll Call.

Abbott’s candidacy is apparently supported by Texas’ other Senator, John Cornyn, who is ascending to the chairmanship of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, according to Roll Call.

The newspaper cites sources that say that Abbott’s candidacy is being sought by “top Republicans both in Washington, D.C., and Texas.” The story also notes that Abbott would not run if Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst chooses to seek the seat.

Greg Abbott is a Bushie Loyalist and a big fat hypocrit:puke:
