For a vacancy that currently does not exist, the anticipated open seat in Texas (Kay Bailey Hutchison is expected to resign at some point in 2009 to run for Governor) sure is drawing a lot of entrants.
Another day, another announcement for the U.S. Senate.
This time the candidate is Michael Williams, the Republican Chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission who was re-elected last month.
Williams, one of the most prominent African-American Republicans in the nation, released a statement announcing his candidacy.
Needless to say, Republicans are thrilled at the prospect of electing a black Republican to the U.S. Senate. It's part of the reason they love Michael Steele so much. Williams is a big recruit, and ought to be one of the frontrunners for the Republican nomination.
He won't be alone, though. The two Democrats considered the best positioned for statewide runs - John Sharp and Bill White - are already in the race, and state senator Leticia Van de Putte may join them.
On the Republican side, there are at least three other candidates already in the race, and Rep. Kay Granger may be joining them.
For pure political spectacle, the Texas Senate Race That Officially Doesn't Exist is shaping up to be one of the best of the next cycle.
