How the right sees this Warren issue-
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 05:25 PM by Bravehammer
"The first problem in figuring out what Obama is trying to signal here is that his own position on same-sex marriage seems inconsistent. He claims to oppose same-sex marriage, but also opposed Proposition 8.

But here's one way of looking at it. Obama stood with liberals in opposition to the proposition. But he does not regard supporters of the proposition, even vocal ones, as irredeemable bigots. By giving Warren a platform, Obama is not endorsing his views--but he is saying that those views are a legitimate part of the national conversation.

That's not a snub of liberals. But it is a swipe at one type of liberalism--the type that has been working to get people fired for making donations to the campaign for the initiative, that has attacked the Mormon Church for its support of it, and so forth.

Not many liberals have spoken up against these tactics. Liberals should not be surprised that Obama has refused to join an effort that implicitly brands a majority of the voters of California, of all places, as at best the dupes of bigots. But those liberals who are engaged in that effort should indeed feel snubbed--as they deserve to be.

9. Do you think Obama inviting Duke to lead the Pledge is an endorsement of his views?
Gosh, if Obama invited David Duke to the inauguration, how could you possibly miscontrue that to mean Obama is a bigot? It's just reaching across the bunker to another group of Americans. After all, Obama said he wanted to be everyone's president.

Get on up here to the podium, David! Your president wants you to feel like you've got a seat at the table too!

2. I'm from Florida.
Our state also passed Porposition 2, which added dscrimination to the state constitution and re-outlawed an already-outlawed gay marriage. I don't see CA as being the dupes of bigots, I see it as being there are more scummy bigots out there than they like to pretend. My state, on the other hand, is chock full of proud bigots....3rd and 4th generation bigots, who probably still get angry at the sight of a free black person.

Fuck the right. Fuck Warren. Fuck religion.

4. I tend to think enough were duped for it to pass
I know I got tired of hearing endless commercials about little Johnnie in school becoming gay if it passed. There were so many lies told around this issue, so much money thrown at it by churches, and enough friggin morons that it took hold with enough to get it passed.

11. Like squares and rectangles!
Squares and rectangles: All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

Now let's use that on morons: All bigots are morons, but not all morons are bigots.

OK, you have a good point and I have been schooled.

3. Wtf. Advocacy is only wrong when "liberals" do it.
What about those horrible ads that implied children would be physically at risk at school? Or, that preachers would be censored at their own pulpits?

And, Obama did not clearly stand against H8 and he sure seems to be standing with it now.

Since when is discrimination a legitimate part of our national conversation? Anyone?

What astonishing, flat out, bs. This "certain kind of liberal" (someone lose their dog whistle?) thinks, no sale.

7. What am I missing here? I see no mentions of the conservatives' take on this
This is an interesting analysis of the dynamics on the Democrats' side of this controversy.

10. That interesting analysis elides the filthy campaign run by the right
that Warren signed off on and demonizes pro civil rights advocates. I guess the frame is interesting.
