Our Caroline made the first of many smart moves today.
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 05:31 PM by monmouth
She made a call to Al Sharpton and told him of her interest in the run for Senator. She showed him respect IMO, and that goes a long way with Al. I had the pleasure of meeting him more years ago than I care to remember. He and I are the same age and at the time were discussing age appropriate aches and pains...LOL. He is a hoot and very personable. This was through the NJ Democratic club I was a member of.

Anyway, he promised her nothing, of course, but did tell her he would put in a word with the Gov. He then went on to mention her many attributes and achievements. Good move Caroline, he is a good guy to have on your side.

Forgot to give the link, sorry....

1. Thanks for that. This shows Caroline's graciousness, doesn't it?
Thank you for being respectful toward her. So many here are not...

3. I named my daughter Caroline. LOL. Actually MIL at the time asked
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 05:41 PM by monmouth
me to name her after her mother, and we called her Casey anyway. Caroline Kennedy has always had a special place in my heart. She'll do well, and am quite sure her mother would have had a fit at the thought of her going into politics. Jackie was sort of a micro-managing parent at times...

4. Aww, that's so nice! I just love your story. I love Caroline also.
Guess there are many people here on DU who are too young to have seen her grow up into the wonderful person she is. What a shame for and on them! They are so mean to her and she never did anything to hurt them. It makes me feel bad for her that people here can be this way...

32. love your post
and had to comment since, as I read downthread, the haters here amaze me.

Like you, I remember the John F. Kennedys and their all too short time Washington where I lived from 1953-1993. So I heartily agree with you about seeing Caroline grow up into a wonderful person.

I think she is an excellent choice and will make a good Senator!

5. Caroline is her own person and
for whatever reason she has decided that now is the time for her to serve in a more public way..I'm wishing the best for her.

Here are some of her qualifications from someone who worked where she did at MMOA..

45. Well, let's see - Caroline Kennedy -
after finishing college, she interned with her uncle, Ted Kennedy, then went to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That's where I know her from. She is a lawyer with 2 publications on civil liberties to her credit. She is president of the Kennedy Library Foundation and has worked extensively with the New York City Public Schools, first as chief executive of the Office of Strategic Partnerships for the NYC Dept. of Education and now as Vice Chair of The Fund for Public Schools. Additionally she has represented the Kennedy family at any number of official functions. She is very intelligent, passionate about civil liberties and the Constitution and knows her way around the American power structure. To me that makes her a very attractive candidate for the position of New York's junior senator."

The clue to why now..might be Obama himself.. in her endorsement of said Prez Elect:)

<snips>

"Sometimes it takes a while to recognize that someone has a special ability to get us to believe in ourselves, to tie that belief to our highest ideals and imagine that together we can do great things. In those rare moments, when such a person comes along, we need to put aside our plans and reach for what we know is possible."

We have that kind of opportunity with Senator Obama. It isn’t that the other candidates are not experienced or knowledgeable. But this year, that may not be enough. We need a change in the leadership of this country — just as we did in 1960.

Most of us would prefer to base our voting decision on policy differences. However, the candidates’ goals are similar. They have all laid out detailed plans on everything from strengthening our middle class to investing in early childhood education. So qualities of leadership, character and judgment play a larger role than usual."

for what her Mother's reaction would be to her becoming a Senator...and its understandable why. She lost her husband and brother-in-law to politics.

I don't think United States Senate seats should EVER be a matter of appointment. Let the people decide. Not one man.

And that goes for Chelsea too, as much as I like her. I think that all these presidential kids should run for office like everyone else if they choose to, but not be given a senate seat as if the senate was the House of Lords.

16. "Al Sharpton promised her nothing"
Sorry to inform you but Sharpton has ZERO pull in promising anybody any kind of senate seat. You give him way too much credit.

If she made a call to him at all (which I seriously doubt) it was strictly a courtesy call of some sort.

35. "Respect?" You don't respect Al, you placate him and buy him
off so that he doesn't show up with his rent-a-mob. Give him a decent enough plum, and some press, and he will keep his trap shut long enough for you to do actual politics.

Al Sharpton couldn't get elected dog catcher in my hometown, and was exposed as a Republican-paid shill long ago--which is why he was given an off-time slot at the 2004 DNC, and, I'm sorry, where was he in Denver????

You should read up on how his 2004 campaign was funded by the GOP and Roger Stone...then come back and tell me just how much 'respect' Al's got in NY politics....

23. Agreed. Good move.
Al Sharpton speaks for a lot of us on the left. During the 2004 Democratic Nominating debates, he and Dennis Kucinich were the only people really telling the truth and speaking to the needs of the American people, and as much as I admire Kucinich, Al Sharpton is a better speaker.

here, who like to forget that Al's 2004 campaign was funded by Republicans---

A fact that both Salon and the Village Voice wrote about at the time...
