MLK day will certainly be different this year
In the past it has been for most a day off and not much more. For some it was a day of reflection on a great life. For an even smaller group it was a day to renew the effort to fulfill Dr. King's dreams.
But this year a part of the King dream will have been fulfilled. And even with possibly the most historic inauguration looming the next day, I believe this MLK day will have its own special significance.
On this MLK day, there will be proof for those who are willing to do the work and make the sacrifice that their dream can be fulfilled. If they are willing to stand up to the naysayers nad hate mongers, they too can succeed and reach for the stars. Yes this year they really can. And this year we can all say with Dr. King "I have a dream"

2. Indeed, this is one of the biggest symbols of how racism has greatly dimished in our country
Racism hasn't been completely crushed, I think the areas of the US where Obama did worse then Kerry in 2004 help show what parts of the nation still have a bunch of racists, but we've made a heck of a lot of progress over these last few decades.

The only way this would be a more fitting time for MLK day is if it was on inauguration day itself.
