The press pulled this shit on Truman and Stevenson
The polls showed Truman behind, so the press decided he was finished. They even went as far as discussing what a Dewey administration would be like. Hence, the famous Chicago Tribune headline, "Dewey defeats Truman".

Adlai Stevenson was an intellectual and deep-thinker. The press kept repeating a talking point, "Stevenson is an egghead. He is far above the heads of the American people, Americans like simple answers", bla, bla, bla.

1. Pulled it on Gore too: Gallop Poll OCT-27-2000 Bush 52% ... Gore 39%

CNN/Time poll: Bush holds edge
From Keating Holland/CNN

October 27, 2000
Web posted at: 8:36 p.m. EDT (0036 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush holds a 49-to-43 percent edge over Democratic rival Al Gore in the latest CNN/Time poll, conducted Wednesday and Thursday.

The poll of 2,060 adult Americans, including 1,076 likely voters, has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points and is thus in essential agreement with a CNN/USA Today/Gallup tracking poll also released Friday. That poll gives Bush a 52 percent-39 percent edge over Gore. More important, both polls show the same snapshot of the current state of the presidential campaign: a solid advantage for Bush.
--------

and we all know how that story ended

2. Ice, thanks for the post
After reading these polling statistics, who would have believed that Gore would win the popular vote by 500,000?

I also believe we are in a much better position than we were in 2000.

Fuck the polls.

3. I think they're trying to demoralize us.
Both the front page and the Style section of the Washington Post the other day (I think it was Friday the 10th) were devoted to how Kerry was losing. The Style article on Bob Shrum even had a headline implying Shrum was something of a curse to candidates. One had to read well into the article before learning that he had quite a few successful campaigns, notably for Senate races.

I think we need to energize people on the ground (and people like George Soros are doing this as we speak) in order to make up for the anti-Kerry, pro-Bush media blitz.

That and we need to hold the media's feet to the fire.

Go forth and conquer!

4. Something I would love Kerry to say
Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 11:57 AM by Miss_Bevey
It wouldn't hurt if Kerry good-naturedly said, "Gee folks, some people say we're behind in the polls, so we should all give up and stay home. We know better, don't we?" That might work as a big morale booster.

I'm gonna e-mail Johnkerry.Com today and make this very suggestion.

6. Not all atr trying to demoralize
You gotta look at individual polls and their internals.

The great majority of polls have Bush ahead by a fractional margin.
Several polls show substantial leads. I go with the great majority of polls.

We're behind, but for a challenger, we're in excellent striking distance.

8. They Are Setting Us Up For Another Stolen Election
If Gallup and Harris polls agree with the Diebolded results,
it will be harder to argue that the election was stolen.

They oversample Republicans because the voting machinez will.

7. This is a worthwhile thread on polls because we're learning something
Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 12:40 PM by higher class
instead of giving CNN NBC Time Newsweek USA Today and other similar shill pollsters our attention. Don't react to these pimps.

Thanks to the people who gave us the context in history in this thread.

If everyone who becomes alarmed at the poll results of the pimps, researches who the pollsters are and how they're connected and posted on that, we could progress.

When talking to acquaintenances and friends (or strangers) talk up the stories you've heard about Republicans who say they can't vote for Bush-Cheney - instead of discussing polls with them. "I don't know if I trust the polls, but I know that I've talked to quite a few and have heard about a lot of people who won't vote for Bush and Cheney this time." Personally, I read all the threads reporting on their talks with people in the office, store, gas station. There are talking points there - talking points of a grassroots type.
