Kerry Suggests Rivals Might Suppress Black Votes
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/12/politics/campaign/12kerry.html

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11 - Senator John Kerry suggested on Saturday that Republicans might be trying to suppress black votes in key electoral battlegrounds, pledging to an audience of the capital's black elite to make sure that "every vote is counted and every vote counts."

"We are not going to stand by and allow another million African-American votes to go uncounted in this election," Mr. Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, told some 3,000 people at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual gala at the Washington Convention Center. "We are not going to stand by and allow acts of voter suppression.''

Drawing the only standing ovation of his 35-minute speech, he said: "We are hearing those things already. What they did in Florida in 2000, some say they may be planning to do this year in battleground states all across this country."

Steve Schmidt, a spokesman for the Bush campaign, refused to respond to the substance of Mr. Kerry's speech, saying the third anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was "a day of remembrance and reflection."

2. I'm so glad Kerry is addressing this issue.
No doubt the 'pubs are planning on doing the same thing this year as they've done every election year since blacks were given the right to vote (yes, Dems have been guilty of this, too). We need to have the U.N. come and observe elections in Florida, and all the other southern states where this practice is widespread.

3. It must have been hard for Wilgoren to write this since

the corporate media has decided to pretend the Republicans didn't intentionally purge Florida voting rolls of thousands of black voters in 2000. Lots of sleeping dogs to tiptoe around.
