"We'll All Pay For Obama Getting Elected" (Need A Chuckle?)

That is what my step father and his buddy told me on the last night of my vacation...

But before I continue... A little history on this.

About two weeks before the election, things got rather heated between me and my step father, to the point that I didn't think we'd even be able to to talk for the rest of the year, and to the point I almost canceled my vacation.

In an effort to bring peace to my mother's household, I lied to him and apologized. My mother told us both that when I came to visit (I stayed with them for two weeks) we could not talk about politics.

I had no problem with this; since Obama won anyway. He however couldn't resist. The whole time I was there he did nothing but bait me over and over again; flaunting his cheap ass McCain/Palin signed picture... watching nothing but Fixed Noise every day and taking jab after jab at Obama.

I sat there for thirteen days and just took it. I wanted to keep the peace, so I mainly just ignored him... Until the last night.

My mother was making a nice big "goodbye dinner" for me; my favorite, chicken fettuccine alfredo. And what does her husband do? He invites his repuke friend over out of the blue; on my last night. He had to pull this on my last night there.

So... My mother and me get home from the store and there they are... sitting on the couch, watching Fixed Noise and bashing Obama. First thing I have to listen to is how the economy is REALLY Bill Clinton's fault because of NAFTA.

I ignored them.

Then they have to talk about how slavery was really not the "white man's" fault. That whites couldn't put blacks on ships and such...

I ignored them and kept on decorating the Christmas Tree.

And then how "white people" didn't really steal Native Americans' land, and how the indians were the ones who were really the violent ones, and how the Native Americans were the ones who really broke the agreements.

Many of you know how proud I am of my Native American heritage, but still I said nothing.

Then of course there was the "Obama is a muslim" bullshit and that he was sworn in on the Koran. However, this one time my step dad disagreed with his buddy when I chimed in and told them I would go up stairs and show them that Ellison was the one they were thinking of.

Of course, it wasn't necessary, but they finally got me to respond, and that was what they were trying to do.

I went back to decorating the tree and listened to them spew bull shit for about thirty more minutes; not saying a word to them. I was not going to let them get the best of me on my last night there.

So, the tree was finally done and I went to the kitchen to help my mom out with dinner, and they started up again. I wasn't listening any more, but my step dad had to shout in "He's just messing with you. Don't get mad."

At this time I had enough. I said "I'm not mad. What do I have to be mad about? My guy won. I'm very happy about it."

He responded "Yeah, and we'll have to pay for Obama getting elected."

I responded, "Like we are right now for Bush? It can't get any worse than that. Here we go again, another democrat has to clean up after some incompetent republican."

SILENCE.

And that is how it was for the rest of the night. We ate dinner; politics didn't come up again. We finished dinner and his friend went home. My step dad didn't say another word to me.

My mother however did say that she wished she hadn't asked me to not discuss politics with him, and that she wished I had a friend with me to take it to her husband.

I laughed, and said I didn't need any help. All it took was that one comment to shut him up.

We go up in the morning and went to Bob Evans where my mom told me that she voted for Obama, but didn't tell her husband and thanked me for shutting him up. She took me to the train station, and here I am now sharing this wonderful experience with you.

I couldn't take it any more. I figured I might as well let him have it. I won't talk to him again until the spring anyway. What was great was my mom saying she wished I had someone with me so I could take him to task.

We had been going back and forth for months; to the point it was getting very hard for her to even be in the house with him; which is why we weren't supposed to talk about politics when I got there.

I have to admit though, it was great to tell him I wasn't mad. I mean, what do I have to be angry about. My guy won... right?

13. When it got really bad in her house...

I told her I wouldn't ask her who she voted for. All I did was give her the truth when she brought something up. She couldn't talk to her husband about any of it because he would get so worked up.

And I didn't ask her who she voted for. She just came out and told me.

It was funny, she had told her husband that she voted for Bush two times because he told her to, and was mad because of how horrible a job Dubya had done. She couldn't stand McCain, and was insulted when he picked Palin.

It's nice to see reason and restraint won out this time.

4. Republicans are so embarrassed by Bush we'll be able to

throw him at them for years to come. No Dem or Rep has done as bad a job as Bush and they know it. All you have to do is use Keith Olbermann's "BUSHED" at them and you can see them cringe. I'll bet that was one of the best visits you have had with your stepfather and the icing on the cake was your Mom's statements. Good for you.

I feel your pain. We have the same issues here and it is exhausting. We have decided to stay home this Christmas and avoid the pain. How can people who have had their way for eight years act as though they have no responsibility for the mess that we are in. AKKKKKKK. felt like I was there! That's quite a story and your mom and you should be proud of the restraint and will power you exercised. Obama is a good inspiration for focus and not letting others ruffle your feathers.

My son said it was nice to be around Obama supporters after he had visited his dad and his wife in San Diego before he and his wife came up to Portland, Ore to see his sister, her family, and moi.

His father lets fauxsn00ze do his thinking for him but both our kids are intelligent enough to think for themselves(thank goodness).

Quite a turnaround for someone who got out of the VietNam War because he had a wife and two babies and now said his grandsons should do their patriotic duty if mccain would have won with his eternal wars.

I'm calling hypocricy to inth degree.

I try. I used to write for my high school and college newspapers. Now I just write here and for my mom's websites and newsletters.

As far as your kids, you should be very proud that the are able to think for themselves. It can be very difficult to stand up for your what you know is right when you parent(s) don't agree.

I had a similar problem with my father, who also loves Fixed Noise, (although more for the short skirts) but we have come to terms after I... Hmm... Well, let's just say I was less tactful with him than with my step dad, but he came around.

But if they (republicans) want to cry about it, let them. There is nothing they can do about it. Obama won, and he has a lot of things to fix. I don't expect them to give him credit for anything he fixes, but then again, I don't really care, and don't really need it.

I heard today from a volunteer at the coop that people he knew who had voted for mccain were coming around to Obama now that they've had a chance to really listen to him:bounce:

12. demdog78 - My SIL was bombarding me with RW propoganda for weeks

prior to the election. All the RW talking points, straight from the RNC and radio hatemongers. She believes Sarah Palin walks on water.

I ignored every one of her missives, and haven't spoken to her since, either.

Now my daughter and sister tell me she is asking around to see if I'm sore, because I haven't replied to her. The fact she is very annoyed without my having to say a word is a great feeling.

I will undoubtedly see her face to face during the holidays, and will do my best to keep her insides churning. My satisfaction will be in knowing that her side lost - she can't take that away from me. Ever.

I've had to do the same thing in similar situations, but they were just begging for it. I'm not close to being Native American and I know there is no way I could have let the Native American thing pass. Nice job.

My mother has been through enough in the last year, excluding political arguments, and really just liked having me around for a change.

The only time he chills out and my 9 year old sister behaves is when I come to visit; so my vacation is really just as much hers. :)

She's a great cook. Although, our thanksgiving dinner didn't quite turn out. It took the turkey over 8 hours to cook (3 more than the directions called for)

So, we cut into it after 6 hours and nuked it to get it on the table. Then her genius husband thought it would be a good idea to cook it the rest of the way at 450 degrees, and said that she didn't know how to cook it, and that next year she should put it in earlier... because you know, cooking turkeys for 30 years doesn't qualify you to cook one on thanksgiving.

Can we say Turkey Jerky?

Typical authoritarian. OH! I forgot, I had her flip cam running the whole time for Thanksgiving dinner. He's such an ass. I forgot I had it running; I just wanted to get the dinner on tape. Instead, I go the real Jim. Fun times.

26. My Mom is 81 yo...

She has never voted for a D in her life...but, she only voted for bush the 1st time, and almost instantaneously realized her error, she refused to vote for him the 2nd time around and left the ballot at the top empty.

This year, she voted for Obama, the 1st time she ever voted D in her life, and she called me tell me she did it for the country..."the nation cannot endure another idiotic Republican at the helm". Fine words for an 81 yo...:)
