It wasn’t too surprising that Barack Obama was chosen Barbara Walter’s “Most Fascinating Person of the Year”. The Obama interview last week was pretty much a dead giveaway. That interview was also much more informative and entertaining, because, well Barack and Michelle Obama are… fascinating.
What is curious is just exactly what kind of life Barbara Walters leads that she finds fascination in a group of primarily unknowns and has-beens. Of course the segment of Michael Phelps was endearing, and it would be hard not to love Tina Fey or Will Smith. But still – are they really the MOST fascinating? I’m not so sure of that.
The lackluster list included Tom Cruise, who had nothing fascinating to say except he wished he’d handled Oprah’s couch jumping differently. Does he really think that matters? Then there was Rush Limbaugh, who was fascinating 15 years ago when he helped sweep the conservatives to power, when he was on her list. But now? Add the pregnant man, the hunting woman, and a few obscure entertainers and I ended up thinking that I’d prefer Barack Obama not be included in this list at all.
Still, the great thing about Barbara Walters is her ability to reveal the heart of the person she is interviewing. She certainly did that with President-Elect Obama, honing in on the basic promise of what it is to be an American, that no matter our background, each of us has the right to direct the course of our own life. That is the true promise of Barack Obama, the hope that the world wants to believe in again. If he can restore that in each of us, then he will have done what we need most and that is what will enable us to solve our problems in the end.
