You can call Obama "Godfather." Bear with me here, folks....
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 10:59 AM by Erin Elizabeth
As I've been reading about Obama's moves with his transition and then this latest thing with Lieberman: http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/lieberman-now-praising-obama-2008-12-01.html (basically the Human Douchenozzle Joe is tripping all over himself to show respect to Obama NOW after he saved his chairmanship seat), a weird notion keeps popping into my head.

Now maybe it's because I just finished reading The Godfather by Mario Puzo, but there are some similarities.

They do NOT involve bodies, olive oil, unregistered guns, New York, Las Vegas, thick moustaches, gambling rings, toll booths, or Sicilian accents, ok? Let's just get that straight. None of the bad stuff.

But if you've read the book (and not just watched the movie) you know that Don Corleone was a man who believed that "your friends should underestimate your virtues and your enemies should overestimate your faults." He also believed in pulling people close because he had plans for them later. He was a guy who looked waaaaaay down the road and didn't just react blindly to a perceived wrong done to him. It was ok with him if *some* people thought him weak in some certain way (when really he wasn't) because it meant they would underestimate him, to their disadvantage. He was a guy who believed in building up favors like credits. (Heeeeey, Congress sort of reminds me of this, too!)

Above all, Don Corleone was an incredibly intelligent man with an impeccable sense of timing, who inspired a fierce loyalty in others. Hmmmm.

2. Ah yes, add that to the list.
No $600,000 horse heads. Or even cheap horse heads. LOL!

3. I've been telling people this for almost a year now.
He reminds me of Michael Corleone. All young and innocent in the beginning, but a quick study and deadly as the boss.

When he had that secret meeting with Hillary in Diane Feinstein's house many months ago, there was a picture taken of him sitting in the limosine. He had a look on his face that reminded me of Michael in the first movie. Then when he won the nomination, he started firing off orders like from a machine gun, "we're moving operations to Chicago", "I'm keeping Dean on as chair of the committee", "we're not gonna take any money from..."

I knew then how shrewd he is. Everything he has done has confirmed it. He is the godfather.

5. Michael? Because I thought Vito was a better Don than
Michael, wasn't he?

But yeah, otherwise I totally agree. Shrewd is a great adjective here.

7. Well, the son is the father, is he not?
He reminds me of Michael because of the innocence in the beginning. Vito never seemed "innocent" even when he was young. I liked the way Michael evolved when Vito got shot. That was always the biggest thing about that movie for me, the way Michael evolved. Even the way he outdid his older brothers reminds me of Obama.

10. Well, that's true.
Yeah, I can see that. And Michael rose up really fast (had to, really).

6. Yep, I get it ...
... I said today that Govs. meeting looked like the scene from Mobsters when Don what's his name declared himself Capo di tutti i capi (Boss of all Bosses) and the rest of the capos came to pay tribute. The difference being THESE guys were meeting for GOOD not evil.

And of course, aside from what happnened to Palin, it had a happy ending. :)

12. Wait, what happened to Palin?
I missed this.

Palin would be like the head of the family from Chicago, because none of the other families liked messing with families from Chicago because they were considered too messy and brutal, so they were sort of ostracized (the analogy gets very weird when you consider Obama is from Chicago, but forget that part of it, LOL).

17. Joey took her for a drive out to the woods.....
... well not REALLY.

Metaphorically.

Let's just say between the President Elect and the Vice President Elect, Governor Palin was sufficiently handled.

11. I would say Rahm is Luca Brasi but he got killed fairly early on.
And to compare him to that former cop that comes in later in the book (Alberto Neri) would just be insulting to Rahm. He's not THAT bad.

But yeah, Rahm is definitely someone pulled straight from those pages, except like I said in my OP, not involved in all that criminal underworld stuff. :)

Would Rahm be like his consigliere?

13. Don Obama
I can see a lot of similarities. Barack doesn't get his feathers ruffled easily. He has a calm, quiet self-assurance going on. He's definitely a big picture kind of guy.

Hey how the hell are ya? I guess your boys are pretty grown by now and aren't you a grandma now? Do you ever miss Carlo? I guess not since you got remarried pretty quickly, right? I'm so glad you forgave Michael.

16. I've said for awhile now that Obama is very shrewd, very in-control...
and can be ruthless if he needs to be.
