You were not my first choice during the primaries. I was concerned about your lack of experience, about lack of details in your promises. I did not, still do not, think that the White House is a training place for wide eyed idealists. But so far you have chosen individuals who do have the experience on how to maneuver this huge mass of a government bureaucracy. And in contrast to the current occupant, who also calmed his supporters by having adults around him, you will actually determine the policy for them to implement.
Ignore the chattering voices from the blogosphere. Criticism and flaming are the bread and butter of the blogs. If they got their wishes and you followed their dictate, they would still find a reason to complain and to whine.
Only last week, there was a blogger - did not catch his name - on one of the cable news stations. An aging hippie with shoulder length gray hair framing his... um.. mature face (no, no baby fat there). And he was whining about the fact that Lieberman was not tarred and feathered and driven out of town. You remember Joe. You campaigned for him. Except for his supporting the war in Iraq he has pretty much been in agreement with the main Democratic ideas. Certainly his constituents like him. But this blogger said something like that: Lieberman went to Minnesota to support Coleman and this is why they hand counting the ballots.
Wrong! The Coleman Franken race has been one of the nastier, if not the nastiest, long and expensive one in the history of the state, a place where the citizens like to refer to themselves as "nice." (Except on the freeways). As Republicans go, Coleman is not as obnoxious as Gingrich or Delay or Trent Lott. He was, after all, a Democrat who celebrated a birthday at Woodstock. The Minneapolis Star Tribune endorsed him. Most of us, who voted for Franken, did not exactly vote for him as voted for a Democratic Controlled Congress to help you with your programs.
There were three hotly contested races in Minnesota: the Senate, and the 3rd and 6th Congressional Districts (the 6th is the home of Michele Bachmann). The Republicans won the two Districts because, first, these are traditionally Republicans ones and the winners have held elective seats before. As is Norm Coleman.
Last Sunday, on the ABC show, Arianna Huffington talked about Hillary Clinton in a way that I cannot find other way to describe except catty. And there was another man, did not catch his name who, on the one hand wished that you have selected more progressive (as defined by the blogs, I suppose) yet added that during the campaign he questioned your decisions several times only to be proven wrong by you.
So, Dear President Elect Obama. You are doing great. Not that my opinion carries any weight, but I do hope that you follow your inner compass and conviction and your clear logic.
With best wishes for the Holidays.
