Can we not post right wing smears about Obama on this website?
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 11:22 AM by CreekDog
Please?

No links to right wing sites.

No cut and pastes of broadsides against Obama.

No cut and pastes of how Obama wasn't born here.

And patronizing afterwards with a line or two about "debunking" or "wanting to know what right wingers are saying" does not make it okay.

It's best not to post crap at all, it's worse when you do it without actually writing responses indicating why it's crap in the first place.

I am dismayed to have read more about the right wing Obama conspiracy theories here than anywhere else.

1. They allow smears against Hillary every other thread it only seems fair to allow them against Obama
so we can debunk them. Just sayin'

2. then why do they post the same smears against Obama multiple times?
I mean if the point is to debunk them and they've been debunked time and time again, is that really arguable as the intention?

I object to people telling me what I can or cannot post on a message board. What part of freedom of speech do you NOT understand?

You are free NOT to read what people write. What God-granted power gives you the authority to tell us what NOT to post here?

RW talking points and BS are not welcomed here.

Bashing Dems is not welcome here.

Those posting such garbage under the guise of concern are often looked at a little more closely.

Some posts flamebait. Somebody says "thanks for your concern." Somebody else says "Don't call my little a troll!" Somebody else says "It's against DU rules to call somebody a troll!"

Lost in the melee is the fact that nobody called anybody a troll.

I see you've only been here about 5 weeks. Forget your illusions about this being a "free speech" site. Yes, progressives believe in free speech in general, but when it comes to an internet message board, DU has rules and guidelines just like any other privately owned message board. Freedom of Speech is a valid principle, but just as it doesn't apply when you are in someone else's home, it doesn't apply to DU. In either case, you may get kicked out.

"I was kind of shocked by your thread, but I realize now that you didn't intend it that way.

It's not right to blame any set of people for Proposition 8, as I've said. It's not right to put a lot of credence in an exit poll with an extremely small sample size. Even if that poll accurately reflects voting patterns, the only use for that data is to get to work, not blame people.

My frustration stems from the fact that I've said this - over and over again - and yet there are still DUers accusing me of racism, both me specifically and me as part of "the gay community," which of course has as little meaning as "the black community." "

Meanwhile we still have numerous posters here posting anti-gay crap on a daily basis.

I never called any group racist. I pointed out statements that I thought were calling out groups by race. You were not mentioned nor referred to in my post that day. And in response, people accused me of saying what I never said and in fact what you are saying about me now.

When you look at my words they were very restrained and very specific and did not call out anybody who did not go after an entire group. I didn't even bring up sexual orientation in my OP and for good reason, I wasn't going to argue against calling out one group by calling out another.

You still are perpetuating such an argument against me when I did no such thing to you.

56. You have a habit of starting threads that accuse other DUers.
Maybe your intentions are good, but the effects of these threads are not beneficial at all. They just create misunderstandings and contribute to vague ideas that a lot of DUer are up to no good.

This OP is a case in point. The implication is that DU is full of people posting right-wing talking points in an effort to undermine Obama. Now you've started a flame war because some posters defend you while others take offense.

You did the same thing earlier when you started threads accusing DUers of being racist. When some of us attempted to defend ourselves, you came into our threads and continued the accusations, posting in tandem with others.

And you claim that *you* feel ganged up on? Here's a way to avoid ever feeling ganged up on. Stop starting threads that accuse other DUers of doing the wrong thing.

39. I'll probably get flamed left and right...
I think it is important for us, as intelligent free thinking citizens, to be aware of what our opponents are saying and doing so that we can make more informed arguments and educate ourselves. As a former teacher, I always taught my students that in order to debate a topic, you must be aware of BOTH sides of an issue so that you can make a powerful argument. Part of knowing both sides, unfortunately, sometimes means delving into the unpleasant or outright wrong aspects of your topic. In this case, I think it is our duty to know what smears are out there so that we can effectively combat them. I don't get the rightwing smear emails anymore from friends and family because they know that I will work hard to debunk every single point in them. I've done my job well enough that I no longer get those emails so I've been taken out of the loop of knowing what is being said. I come here to find out political news, slanders, lies, and the truth...not a happy meeting house where everyone has their fingers in their ears singing LALALALALALA at the top of their lungs pretending that our opponents don't exist.
