The Democratic Party is a Diverse Coalition
The Repukes are a homogeneous party. The repukes have old rich whites and religious rights. They march lockstep because they have very little diversity.

The Democratic Party is the party of The People. We are a diverse coalition, which is why I am so proud to be a part of it.

We have minorities: Black, Latino, Asian, Native American, Jewish, GLBT.

We have issue-focused activists: Environmental, Civil Rights, Pro-Peace, Pro-Choice, Pro-Labor, Anti-Poverty, Pro-Education, Pro-Healthcare.

We have Pro-Corporate, Social Liberals in the Democratic Party. And, we have Economically Liberal, Socially Conservative Blue Dogs.

Repukes, when they have power can run roughshod, forcing their agenda because the party pf old white dudes will usually be in line.

The Democratic Party, when we have power, still has the task of getting the coalition to work together. It is not always easy, as the diversity is so great. The most effective way for the Democrats to govern is to give everyone a place at the table, and cooperate.

This is what I think Obama is doing. He is bringing into his cabinet representatives of the various groups found within our wonderful party. Look at his agenda, and his words. That is what the focus of his coalition's work will be.

We will never agree on all issues, in fact we will rarely agree on a SINGLE issue. And, for that I am grateful. That is what I love about the Democratic Party and DU. Every issue, every opinion, every vote, every post will be answered with a wide range of opposing opinions.

I am always impressed with DU's ability to deliver such a wide view of issues. Many times I open a thread, thinking I know exactly what the response should be, and then I see several unique angles, and I learn something. We each have something to teach each other, and we grow as individuals and as a political party. We become more diverse, more open and stronger.

Keep on keeping on, DU, you know what to do!

4. Everyone's beating me to creating these threads...
And after I spent all night stocking shelves and composing it in my head. This, the whole thing about criticism, how people on both sides ('Let's Give Him A Shot' and 'I'm Pissed, Pissed I Say!') aren't helping matters...

I want to add, though... Can we look at what we accomplished? We elected a young, intelligent, supposedly socialist/elitist African-American candidate into the White House. This was a harsh battle up the steepest of hills in a hurricane, but we did it. Something that many said could not be done.

And it wasn't just the Progressives, or the Liberals, or any faction of the party. It was EVERYBODY. For the first time in my short life, I saw a Democratic party working together. The Republicans tried, as they always do, to exploit our diversity, to try and turn it against us, but it didn't work - instead, it's their party that's now in disarray, without a leader or a cohesive agenda. They couldn't stand up to us when we united.

I don't want to lose that unity. I want to keep working together. We get so much more accomplished - and we can keep it up and still disagree, without being disagreeable.

Kicked and rec'd. I've said most of what's been on my mind.

7. It was something to behold, eh?
The unity is what won the election. And I'll be damned if I am just gonna sit back and watch the unity be injured. I will fight to keep party unity intact.

13. The ideological purists at DU who want Obama to turn hard to the left...
have got to remember your point. The Dem Party is indeed very diverse and that's why we won. If we didn't have DLC types and Blue Dogs with us we would have lost. If we are only a left wing party then we lose.
