2. A President who reads something other than
My Pet Goat. What a concept! It would appear that America lives after all.

3. It's nice to have a President again that can actually read something substantial
Edited on Sat Nov-22-08 11:37 PM by ...of J.Temperance
As opposed to the doofus that's leaving office soon, who I dare say would even have difficulty getting through "Spot Goes To The Farm"....he certainly these past eight years, has displayed great problems even reading pre-written scripts for him.

On Edit: Hit return to quick

12. he stated that he was reading 2 FDR books as well.
Guess he doesn't want to look like he's going to school.
Then he would need a bookbag.

However, in public he has to be seen absorbing everything from the Republican side. I guess he's simply trying to sell himself as bi-partisan. Books can turn into symbolic moments in the public eye--especially in the age of the media.

Him walking around with books is more believable plus its a good picture to show to kids.

17. Seems like PR work to me
Color me cynical. I agree that it could be good for the kids, though I don't see how much of a difference it will make. They will be told a hundred ways how heroic his drive to the Presidency was, I don't think this photo will add to that.

It seems just as transparent as when dumbya did it and makes an unwelcome association with Obama's highly unsavory predecessor.

I believe there is a good chance he might actually be reading it. With W. I doubt somedays he knows how to read.

25. He may be actually talking about it to friends...
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 04:50 PM by lunatica
He may actually be coming up with some sort of pragmatic plan with some of the highlighted notes in the Lincoln book.

I see much to admire in him carrying around a book that obviously has what might be notes in it and is about one of the most accomplished Presidents in our history. It's no small thing to hold a country together and to abolish slavery at the same time. And don't understand how you just dismiss it as a transparent act like Bush's. Do you dislike people who carry their reading material around? I really don't get why you're even saying it's the same as Bush's props. And if Obama reminds us constantly of how bad the last 8 years have been, then more power to him. We need to be reminded a lot.

Of course I work in a university so I'm quite used to seeing professors carrying their reading material with them.
