AP: NY Elementary School is Renamed for Obama
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 01:43 PM by npincus
Cool.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20081121/obama-school/

NEW YORK — It was only a matter of time. A New York school has been renamed in honor of President-elect Barack Obama.

The former Ludlum Elementary School, in Long Island's Hempstead Union Free School District, was renamed at a school board meeting Thursday _ effective immediately. The new name is the Barack Obama Elementary School.

School officials say most of the 440 students there are black or Hispanic, and Obama's victory is a source of great pride.

2. Bush has a few DUI Schools named after him.
His "victory" is a source of a drunk's great pride.

GOBAMA! :woohoo:

Edit to say that while the Sewage Plant idea didn't pass, I still applaud the effort :)

7. Bad idea. They should have to wait until 5 years after any politician leaves office...
...just like the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Having public facilities named after current office holders is too partisan and yes, divisive.

Don't deny it.

15. But I'm not and I'm not interested in hypotheticals which put Republican sensibilities at the fore.
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 02:03 PM by ClarkUSA
As far as I'm concerned, if the name change makes those kids feel better about themselves, that's enough.
Get your head out those GOP/false equivalency clouds, because in a reality-based world, they matter not
a whit to me or those kids.

18. But what of the kids it *doesn't* make feel better about themselves?
Not everyone going to that school has parents that supported Obama, and yet they are taxpayers.

It's a bad idea, and contrary to Obama's unity vision IMO.

You obviously are not a New Yorker or know what we're like or else you wouldn't say spout such nonsense.

And the school is free to do what it wants. If you have a problem with it, do call them and register your tender concern
for those poor widdle traumatized Republican kids in Hempstead, Long Island. Let me know how it goes.

I could care less what a prissy pill like you thinks of me but do keep looking out for hurt Republican feelings caused
by Obama supporters' actions. In the meantime, I think I'll occupy my Millennial voter time by enjoying Obamamania
spread throughout the land and across the globe.

Time they are a changin' and that means the old way of thinkin', too. ;)

19. I agree. in most cases
but naming things in ethnic neighborhoods for someone of the same ethnicity is usually pretty un-controversial -- who is going to argue about structure or infrstructure in black, hispanic and native communities being names after local heroes?

But in terms of stuff that everyone has to use - hell no. still won't fly into "DC/Reagan" and insist on calling it "Washington National". It was already named for a perfectly good President. And every goddamned thing in Texas, except the LBJ Freeway, seems to be named for Bush I. Gaak.

9. Not sure how I feel about this.
I tend to think that places shouldn't be named after a president at least until he is out of office, or maybe even until he is deceased.

This man has yet even taken the oath office. I'll file this one in the weird column.
