What on earth could be the benefit of a slaughter scene in the background?
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 12:01 AM by asSEENonTV
Apparently the Palin press team has released a statement saying Palin knew of the grisly back drop and OK'd it.

Why?

That is one of the most bizarre media interviews I've seen.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/20/sarah-palin-holds-news-co_n_145375.html

The words she blathers become mere gibberish and an eerie score as the idiot lynch man does his bloody deed.

WOW.

:wtf:

11. unintended living metaphor and found poetry
Palin proclaims the turkey's innocence and reads the pardon

then looks at the thing like it's filthy and she might just shoot it

gives interview while birds are slaughtered on an assembly line behind her

this is what republicans do

like stevenson said of nixon... he can cut down a redwood tree, then make a speech for conservation, standing on the stump

this is their idea of public education

this is their idea of health care

this is their idea of foreign policy and "peace keeping"

even if they can't verbalize it... the philosophical heirs to economic darwinism, think genocide is a function of natural selection; that war and disease are ways to conserve resources on a shrinking planet

that scene was metaphor and poetry... what we say vs what we do

21. More Culture War stuff---Rural farmers vs Urban Elitists? Who the hell knows.
I thought it was pretty bizarre. Certainly not the cutesy turkey pardon that we're all used to seeing. Maybe she wanted everyone to see what fate from which she had delivered the lucky bird.

Or maybe this is more culture war politics.

The people who are going nuts about this are the sort of people who despise her already--that and Republican operative types like Joey the Scar and Pat Buchanan who cringe whenever they see a Republican doing anything stupid. Neither of those guys--of course--are exactly country folk and may not have insight into how people in other parts of the country, the sort who love Sarah might see this.

In Palin's "Real America" country folks know how turkeys are butchered. After all, if you raise turkeys or any other food animal for a living, you know that it's going to end up in a slaughterhouse. Plenty of country people raise a turkey or two for their own use at thanksgiving and slaughter it themselves. Either that or they go out hunting. I give them credit actually--most of us don't want to know anything about the process by which a living breathing bird becomes the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving table.

Those particular turkeys look like they're being processed on the farm they were raised on for the custom trade. They were spared the ride to the processing plant and while not easy to watch, their demise was relatively quick. Those slaughter cones seem a big improvement over the old ax and block method that I saw used once many years ago.

Maybe its people screaming "OH NO TURKEYS ARE BEING KILLED! THIS IS DISGUSTING!" but who fully intend to sit down to a nice turkey dinner with all the trimmin's including giblet (that's turkey guts kids) gravy are the ones who are out of touch with reality.

27. Imma have to sit next to you. Although Palin isn't the brightest bulb in the box
educationally, she does have excellent political instincts (remember how she peeled da base away from Mccain) in a ruthless, bizarro sort of way.

She knows what she's doing. She knows who this video will turn on and impress and who it will turn off and disgust. She knows how to bring out the dark soul in her fan club and has no problem doing so.

She's a slick one and she's dangerous, much more so than Mccain ever would be.

We really do need to keep one eye peeled on Alaska from here on out.

34. Yes she is a slick one. The more the "elitists" trash her the more her followers love her.
I don't even know if it's the dark soul of her fan club.

I think that she knew that people who are not in touch with the rural side of life would be horrified by the sight of her talking while turkey's are being slaughtered. People who live and work with farm animals that are destined for the table would just see a guy doing his job--and incidently not doing a bad job of it. She actually said something to the effect of "I know I'll be criticized for this but so what."

She'd probably also love to see people in the netroots and the media focus on the fellow who was chopping turkeys heads off in the background, calling on PETA to condemn this guy and the like. The fact that most of those people will not be strict vegetarians would just be icing on the cake.

"Joe the Turkey Chopper" anyone?

42. You might be missing the point
We all know where our food comes from and how it is killed - we don't need a lecture about it. The point is that she allowing it (she had been asked by the film crew if she minded it as a backdrop and she ok'd it) as a backdrop to her interview is a bit sick.

She gets trashed. Her base feels they are being trashed too--and by a bunch of hypocrites no less. The GOP bigshots in the meantime are getting agita over how this makes them look in the suburbs but Sarah's on the national news and that's all that counts.

36. Actually, I think this could be a plus for her with rural voters.
As I said in another post, Sarah Palin has figured that her base of power is among rural, very religious, less educated conservatives. The more the so called elites criticize and mock her the more they love her.

Country people, particularly those who work with farm animals that are destined for food, are not going to be as horrifed as suburban and urban dwellers. As I said in another post, quite a few families raise their own thanksgiving turkey and when the big day comes, do the honors themselves. For most it's not fun, it's a job that has to be done if you're going to have meat on the table. The guy dispatching turkeys in the background was just doing his job--and by the way--as slaughtering goes--not doing it badly.

The best thing that could happen to Sarah would be for people to go over the top, report "Joe the Turkey Chopper" to PETA and have the media trash her and I think she damn well knew this when she told the camera crew to stay where they were.

Sarah Palin, like Bush, may not be the most sophisticated kid on the block but she knows how to push the buttons.

39. I'm not referring to the carnage, bad as that may be for some.
How stupid is it to make a big deal out of pardoning ONE turkey and then give an interview immediately afterward in front of all the others who didn't get "pardoned" meeting their inevitable end? Heck, they probably took the pardoned turkey around back and slaughtered him too.

And, yeah, maybe the people who loved her will eat this up, too. But it didn't work out very well for the Republican party in general.

40. Oh I'm sure the Republican party in general is apoplectic over her.
Her country star status a very big thorn in sides of the GOP. They've created a monster here and now they have to figure out how to kill the monster without turning off those who adore her. Good Luck to that.

By the way, did you hear Joey the Scar and Buchanan yucking it up over this video clip. Good Republicans both and I'm thinking they've turned around on their view of Sister Sarah. I'm also thinking though they're not getting the idea that this solidifies her base. Country boys those two guys ain't.

And I agree the "pardoned" turkey will probably end up on the block--or in the cone--if not for Thanksgiving--by Christmas.

The comments from the reliably-insanerightwingers on my local TV news blog are 100% favorable toward this. They love it. Palin speaks to their fantasy of a "real America" where men are men and women aren't afraid to see chickens slaughtered. It feeds their delusional idea that the rest of America is made up of terrorists and latte-drinking liberals.

It's a fantasy but it's where they live.

This was yet another disgusting display of the "feminist" trying to show that she can keep up with the boys!!!

And before I get lambasted here - my point is that she, herself, feels the need to show that she can keep up with the boys. It's her attitude about women, in general. She, herself, doesn't see women as true equals.

This woman has some serious problems.

PR tone deafness, I sez. I'm not sure that scene appeals even to everyone in the base and certainly isn't a big winner outside of it.

The upside is hopefully it's airing will educate people on what's under that plastic wrap at the supermarket. That disconnect has been a brilliant campaign by factory farming. Eating less meat and confining it to local vendors is good for you and good for the environment. Eating no meat at all is better, and I think the animals would agree. :)
