Clyburn not interested in HUD post

By POLITICO STAFF

Despite inquiries from the Obama transition team, James Clyburn has indicated he’s not interested in being HUD secretary.

Despite inquiries from the Obama transition team, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) has indicated he’s not interested in becoming secretary of Housing and Urban Development, according to two sources close to the congressman. Clyburn is the third highest ranking Democrat in the House. He played an influential – if not official – role in the critical South Carolina Democratic primary when he urged President Clinton to “chill a little bit” after making critical remarks about President-elect Barack Obama.

1. Why would he want to be pigeon holed into HUD when he is 3rd or 4th from the top leadership job?
He is not Rahm Emanuel who has been in office about 6 or 8 years. He's been in Congress and has seniority on his side. It makes more sense for long serving members to stay put if they don't plan on retiring anytime soon.

2. Maybe they were just asking to be polite.
HUD is somewhat of an insult. Kinda like asking a woman to take HHS... instead of State, Defense or Commerce.

3. Agree about the way HUD has been considered
Although ironically, one would think that given the current housing crisis and the economic collapse, a real expert should be appointed there to make HUD ready to help fix the mess.

4. Yeah, I agree.
I was like, James Clyburn? :wtf: I love the guy and everything, but, um, no. We have a housing crisis right now. It would be nice if we had a housing expert, especially one with specific insight into low income families, Fannie and Freddie, and possible non-profit experience, in that position.

5. If Obama's presidency is to be effective, agencies like HUD and HHS
are going to be just as important as State, Defense, and Commerce. Solutions to the mortgage and health care crises, two of the largest problems facing our nation, will flow through these organizations.

7. I think he would have been great in the job, but I totally get why he wouldn't take it.
