He was bin Laden's number two man, and still is. Although, he is very likely really number one, now. Bin Laden is widely believed to be dead.

The many, many, many Al-Qaeda Number 2's we have captured or killed are #2's in Iraq or some other local branch.

believe that Al-Zawahri could have come up with that cultural reference, that his cultural advisor or aide or whatever you want to call him, is Adam Gadahn, also know as Azziz the American. Gadahn is a young, native Californian, who grew up as a Christian and converted to Islam.
