Nate Silver: "Mark Begich is now an overwhelming favorite to win the Alaska Senate seat."
"The Alaska Board of Elections has finally updated (pdf). With 17,728 votes counted since the previous update, Democrat Mark Begich has the lead over Republican Ted Stevens, 132,196 to 131,382.

More votes to be counted tomorrow and possibly Friday.

As we've pointed out and has been pointed out elsewhere, the remaining votes come from Begich-friendly districts. Mark Begich is now an overwhelming favorite to win the Alaska Senate seat."

1. Is there an automatic recount for close elections?

3. Yes.

If it's close it's automatic and paid for by the state. Like Minnesota. that would require recount regardless of what either candidate wanted. Coleman complaining about something that is mandatory is just for show.

If it's not close enough but a candidate wants to recount, he has to pay for it.

4. Thanks. Hopefully it won't be close enough for a recount.
I don't trust Alaskans to do a fair recount

5. This is very strange.
Why did the initial count have the repuke winning? There is some cheating going on in Alaska and it ain't coming from illegal immigrants.

9. I think that this is part of the original count. For some reason, 90,000
ballots were not counted on election night. This is not the recount.

7. You know who Sarah Palin will blame it on
Communist Eskimos coming over from Siberia (she saw them canoeing over
from her side of the Bering Strait, and made her conclusion based on
her vast foreign policy experience).

Small difference, but you never know where a quote might end up, so it should be correct.
