question about the employee free choice act
I was curious about the employee free choice act. I heard it passed the house but didnt get far in the senate in the current congress. What is the chances that it will be passed into law now? I have a good feeling it will pass but wanted to know everyones opinion here about it. I am hoping it passes to give workers at companies like walmart and other retail companies that are anti union a voice.

1. If we can get to at least 58 it has a good chance...
Arlen Spector will support it. Plus it is possible to pick off at least one of the ladies from Maine.

3. Extremely well.

It's sponsored by more reps and Sens. than any other legislation. But since it's a bill that's been trying to get passed for 10+ years. it should be.

EDIT for links. Be sure and sign up your support. You don't have to be a union member to pledge your support. In fact, getting you represented is the whole point in passing it.

4. All the dems & specter voted for it in 2007
Edited on Tue Nov-11-08 08:11 PM by Juche
One dem wasn't present but all the other dems, including Lieberman, voted for it in 2007. So it was shot down 51-48.

If the dems win one of the 3 remaining races they get 58 seats. With specter that is 59. That means only one GOP senator needs to be bribed or intimidated into voting for cloture. They can be offered a pork (that is partly how the bailout bill got passed, some relucant politicans were offered pork for their districts) or threaten one of the GOP senators who barely won in 2004 and is up for reelection in 2010 with massive labor support (tens of millions of $s, thousands of volunteers) for their opposition to get it to 60 and get past a filibuster. Several GOP senators won by 51-49, so let the SEIU, AFL-CIO and other orgs threaten to spend 20 million and send thousands of volunteers into their state to support the democratic opposition.

Several GOP senators won in 2004 by less than 5%, and will be somewhat easy to intimidate by using the 2010 election as leverage. It'll fly through the house and Obama will sign it if they get past the senate.

I've heard once we get it the ranks of unions will go up by 1 million a year for the next decade.

5. It will be a huge triumph for organized labor if EFCA becomes law.
Obama supports its passage.
