HOUSE GOP POISED TO BRING ON THE CRAZY.... (MSM poised to help)

HOUSE GOP POISED TO BRING ON THE CRAZY....

Voters heard all kinds of bizarre rhetoric from Republicans about Barack Obama during the campaign, but one hoped that it was just the result of poor character and campaign desperation. It's not as if party leaders and elected officials actually believe such stupidity; they were just willing to repeat nonsense to win votes.

It's more troubling when these folks start accepting their own talking points as true.

A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may -- may not, I hope not -- but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism." <...>

"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist." <...>

"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential of going down that road."

Now, if I'd read this perspective on some right-wing blog, I'd assume it was just some random nut. But Paul Broun is a member of Congress, speaking on the record, to a national news outlet.

It's tempting to ignore the point of Broun's madness, but in case there's any confusion here, his paranoia about a "national security force" that answers to Obama is apparently a reference to speech Obama delivered over the summer about, as the AP noted, "a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure -- an idea endorsed by the Bush administration."

Broun said his lunacy "may sound a bit crazy." Don't sell yourself short, congressman, it is crazy.

more

Stop the madness! The BS reporting going on now is ridiculous. The media is spinning the news like there is one branch of government. It's as if they want to create the impression that Obama has assumed the role of President of the Executive and Congress. It's absurd. It's clear where the RW/MSM talking points are headed.

Obama made it clear: One President at a time. He gets his turn on Jan. 20.

1. The GOP has been taken over by extremists.
I believe that the politics of the last eight years have resulted in the majority of Americans coming to the realization that there are elements within the republican party that are a threat to democracy. If the republican party does not move more to the center they will continue to be marginalized.

2. Start censuring them and even question their competency to hold
public office. If they're going to act crazy the we need to treat them like they are.

9. The MSM is posed to help? Really?
The MSM will pillory Broun, and they haven't particularly gone after Obama. That probably will change, but this meme that the MSM has treated Obama unfairly and sided with puke attacks on him, is baloney.

I suggest you read this:

U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Crazy
By Jay Bookman | Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 09:16 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A Georgia congressman, Paul Broun of Athens, has accused Barack Obama of being a Marxist with secret plans to take over the country, abolish all rights and rule as dictator just as Hitler did.

That’s a U.S. congressman, yes. From Georgia.

Broun might as well have claimed that he had been abducted by aliens and appointed queen of their planet Bogusia. It’s a claim with just as much basis in fact as what he actually said, and it probably wouldn’t have done more damage to what remained of Broun’s credibility.

I don’t doubt for a moment that Broun feels threatened by the prospect of Obama in the White House. But he can’t admit the real reasons for that feeling, probably even to himself, so he resorts to fantasy as a way to express it.

Sane people all over the country are snickering at Broun, as they should be. He is the point at which the lunatic fringe and Republican officeholders intersect.

Here’s his direct quote:

“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force. I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism. That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did. When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist

13. "the MSM has treated Obama unfairly and sided with puke attacks on him, is baloney."
You were trying to make this point with an opinion piece on a newspaper blog?

The OP title stated poised, even if it's for no other reason than the OP article itself.

Also, the numerous articles trying to give the impression that Obama is going to make appointments based on loyalty or that he's interfering in Congressional decisions are feeding into this talking point.

10. This guy is in Congress and yet he doesn't know that no President
can do anything but execute the laws; that the body he is a member of would have to pass any measures, and that if such measures were passed, the courts could overturn them.

???

the people in his district ought to be ashamed of themselves for electing him.

11. "It's bad enough that he wants to keep us from putting women in jail for using birth control"
Probably his Supreme Court nominees will object to forcing public schoolchildren to say sectarian prayers, or argue that religious fairy tales don't belong in science class.

clearly, we're careening towards totalitarianism.

Everything else Broun says sounds even dumber than that, of course.
