Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 08:40 PM by mycritters2
would it be wrong to send a message to the Obamas via change.gov? :)

on edit: Here's the dog, one of three labradoodles in a Washington shelter:

22. R they house broken & how can I get one in NY?
I'm kinda lonely and all my family & friends say a dog would help. I actually want one that doesn't shed but more like something I could pick up if I had to. I like Wheatons & Airdales & I had an outdoors Lab for years.

3. If it has poodle fur, it should be
I think "labradoodles" are supposed to have poodle fur. It's kind of a quasi-breed, like cockapoos (which I never hear of anymore).

4. What is petfinder.com?
Is it a list of dogs from shelters? Or is it a list of backyard breeders and puppy mills?

I never recommend buying a dog off the internet.

I have rescued and shown dogs for many years.

6. It lists all kinds of pets
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 08:35 PM by goodgd_yall
From rescue organizations, shelters, and fosters. It's a great way to find out what's available and you can search for anywhere in the country. You don't buy them on the internet. Each listing has a contact number with which to reach the rescue org., or shelter.

12. Petfinders is great
I adopted my dog, Roxie (see picture), from them. It's a database of all shelter dogs in the US. You can do a search by breed, location, gender, size, age, etc. I'm very, very happy with my girl.

14. That's how I got Ollie a month ago.
I put on an email search for a Leonberger mix and in 2 months got this pic. (Then I drove 500 miles to get the dog!)

36. The shelter where I volunteer advertises on Petfinder. I got one of my dogs,
(see pic below) from a Petfinder search. (He came from a shelter two counties away.)

It's a great search tool. I wish more people knew about it.

39. I was glad I found it..
I wanted a shelter dog, but I wanted a choice. I tell everyone about Petfinder. If they are willing to wait a little while and drive a little they can find a dog that is pretty much what they want. Funny story though- I met someone at the dog park who was hoping to get a Bernese Mountain Dog and they found what they thought was a young Bernese mix on Petfinder. When he grew up he looked more like a large beagle mix than anything else, but of course they love him!

15. Our local animal shelter
(a county government entity) uses Petfinder.com as a way to showcase the animals they currently have at the shelter. I assume other shelters use this tool as well.

28. Most every shelter and rescue organization posts their pets there now. It's GOOD thing!
My family has used it many times when looking for pets to adopt and rescue. When I'm ready, we're going to rescue a mini-Aussie to join our other one, and I've already seen quite a few in rescue shelters that look great!

7. I got my great dog on petfinder.com, and I have
several friends who have, as well. Our dog is a purebred, but like so many of her breed, was given up to a shelter when her original family could no longer keep her.

17. Apparently they've got a doghouse...
if they accepted Ellen DeGeneres' miniature White House-dog house. But waiting until spring sounds like a good idea...if they can stand to hear Malea and Sasha asking about it everyday until then.

20. It would be very wrong. That's not what the website is for.
This is a decision for their family to make and it has nothing to do with governing. It is absolutely none of your business. Let them choose their pet in peace. There will be enough people harassing them over every little thing they do without us joining in.

32. It is not kind to insert yourself into a family's private decision
without being invited to do so. It's making yourself a pain in the ass.

Does anyone really think that Obama's staff need to be weeding through thousands and thousands of letters, e-mails, and phone calls about what dog the family should get? Is that the best use of their time? Do you think they'll appreciate or enjoy doing it?

I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Obama is rather disappointed that there is SO much interest in this personal decision which affects NO ONE except HIS family (and of course one dog) and comparatively little interest in his governing and staffing decisions, which affect EVERYBODY.

I'm sorry, I know this sounds harsh. I feel very strongly about this. It's none of our business and we shouldn't attempt to make it our business.
