Under the headine: WTF!!!
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 08:59 PM by yellerpup
On Wednesday morning after the presidential election, every paper in the United States, and probably the world, reported that Barak Obama had been elected as the 44th president of the United States. All papers, that is, but one. The Sapulpa Daily Herald (Sapulpa, Oklahoma) did not mention one word about Obama's victory. The editor's excuse was that by the time the Herald would be distributed on Wednesday that it was already "old news." However, he did report that McCain had carried Oklahoma by a wide margin. That was old news, too, but apparently more newsworthy in Sapulpa than the fact that we had a new president and, oh yeah, our first Black president. For those who might not know, Oklahoma is ruby red! And this guy is even redder! Especially his neck!!!

sdhads@sbcglobal.net their e-mail address

If you go on their web page and click on "about us" or "contact us," someone has beaten you to it. It's now written in jibberish, in keeping, I guess, with the rest of the stuff they write!

This was sent to me by one of the few progressives in Oklahoma.

Edit for spelling

7. There are more than a few
progressives in Oklahoma.
Lots of them are in Norman, where I live. Granted, I get grief for my accent, which "ain't quite Yankee".
It had one of the largest socialist parties in the US at one time.
Now, not so much. But, I will write for probably the 100th time since the election, Okie progressives tried hard to gain support for Democratic candidates, with some success.

Sorry we suck so bad. :(

8. I was born and raised there, so I know what you mean.
My SIL said that after I moved away there were only two progressives left. I know that's not true because most of my friends were to the left of the dial (Tulsa) and I feel for you. That is one of the great things about Obama and his refusal to accept the red state/blue state thing. When you say the political state sucks so bad, don't include yourself. :yourock:

10. I don't...
when I get back, Drinking Liberally will get cracking again in Norman. My friends and I are a rabidly leftist bunch, which typically draws evil stares from "locals" when we go out to the bars (most of us are either grad students or professors).
When I leave Norman though, I shiver until I get to OKC or Tulsa...mostly because all we get on the radio is the Jesus Music and country. Barf.

and not pistolas. I had to learn how to dial back on partying when I moved to the East coast for safety's sake. Have fun wherever you are while you can. :toast: Toby Keith....urg! But, BIG PICTURE, WE WON!!! Barack Obama is now president-elect of the United States of America. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

so I really, really have to be careful at the moment. Mexico is going to the dogs at the moment.

But in Norman, eh, nobody there messes with a tattooed girl...they're too intrigued, even if I'm spouting off anti-Bush stuff ;)

Texas does- all the people who couldn't hack the north have flooded to both states and took the average IQ down.

Wow, I think I'll just avoid the massive coronary I'm about to have.

Just to note: I grew up in NJ and lived in CA before I moved here. I'm 31 and nearly done with a PhD. We also have one of the best state universities in the nation (University of Oklahoma- highest rate of National Merit Scholars).

16. You misunderstand what I meant...
or perhaps I didn't quite phrase it right. It was a did at the people who came here, not the ones who migrated. When I think of my time in Cleveland, I long to be back. A generally liberal city, where intellect is not ridiculed. Where religion is not up in your face all the time (note- the in your face religion thing didn't seem to occur here until the 90's migrations). With a great ethnic diversity (which brings with it a diverse cuisine). A lot of the snowbirds were of the inferior sort. If I could get a job in Cleveland getting what I am paid now, I would love to escape the Bible Belt and rejoin the civilized world.

This is a funny state- the big cities (excepting Austin) are full of rednecks, and the small towns are full of common sense folks. Rural Texas is much more tolerable than DFW

20. The person who has upset us is a doofus newspaper editor in the small
town of Sapulpa. We don't hate each other. There are plenty of smart people in Oklahoma and Texas, just not plenty enough to swing the vote to Democrat! Stupidity is the sin, and love is the answer, brother.

28. Just read your reply to michelle77.
You need to come on back nawth, darlin'. After living in NYC for 20 years, we tried NC for 22 months in 2004-05 and were scandalized by the obligatory praying before--every event! Even the local Democratic meetups, even business meetings! Hopefully Obama will open up opportunities for people in areas of the country that have long suffered under Republican neglect. I get you. I hope you get to come back to a way of life where every meeting doesn't begin with: "What church y'all go to?"

18. Before my sis in OK got cable, it was like going to a newsless bubble
when I would go up there to visit. 20 minutes of local news and then...onto the weather and then local sports. Alrighty then. Had to sneak off to use her computer to get my news junkie fix in (between her kids playing video games on it)...yeah, they just love it when the aunt from TX comes for a visit, I'm sure.."she wants on OUR computer???"

It's no wonder why she jokingly blamed me when she didn't know that the price of stamps went up a while back. Said her first thought/comment to someone was that she didn't know because **I** didn't tell her and it is from me where she gets her "news". I asked her one time how the hell her state could go red nationally and yet they have a Democratic governor...she answered "Oh, our governor is a Democrat?" (sigh). I phoned her right after they announced Obama had won on Tuesday night... just in case she had on a local channel and not a cable news channel :)

30. **She** took it well..couldn't talk long because she is married to a repuke
and if the repuke in the house is not happy, no one in the house gets to be happy..or be on the phone, apparently, cuz she had to abruptly end the conversation. She makes a point to go the polls without him, otherwise he looks over her shoulder and if she didn't vote for repukes, there was hell to pay afterwards. Going alone = she can vote Dem.

Yes, he IS a true repuke asshole. If for some reason the family doesn't go to church on any given Sunday, the kids either have to hear him read from the Bible for an hour, or worse yet, they have to watch some crazy, hateful psuedo-preacher on TV. So unless someone is near death, sis gets them all to church cuz so the kids don't have to be a captive audience at home.

32. That is rather frightening, actually.
No wonder she tunes out the bigger part of the world. "If daddy ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Looking over her shoulder, hell to pay, crazy, hateful, captive audience." Is that the way she describes her life to you? That sounds like serious abuse and a pretty tightly controlled life for a grown woman who is raising children. I hope she's okay and I'm glad that she still has you in her life to look out for her. Don't let him push you out no matter what. You may eventually become her only link to the outside world. I'm proud of you for sticking close by.
