24. It's been known.
Funding came from the church in Salt Lake City, UT. The president of the church issued a "call to arms" so to speak for all members to do whatever they could to pass Prop 8.

34. My greatest regret from this election will be that I didn't do anything to stop prop 8.
There is so much going on in politics that I'm too busy to worry about everything. I don't get involved in out of state politics unless it's big like Bachmann or Herseth (2004?). But I have to tell you, I never thought it would or could pass. I thought... California...60% Obama... San Francisco... never going to pass. I am sad and embarrassed that I didn't do more. I felt like I got punched in the stomach when I heard it passed. It's so cruel. This is America. We don't take people's rights away. But somehow in California of all places, they did.

I bet even a portion of all that money wasted on Tinklenburg would have made a difference. I didn't have money, but I talked to what family I have down there.

I also assumed, its California. I'm in Oregon. Cali is supposed to be our liberal big brother. What happened.

Progressive Oregonians were none too proud of the passage that awful measure 36, but it's been 4 years, and like everyone we'd hoped that the winds of change were strong enough to defeat this crap in California.

30. If you ever make it to LA, make sure to drive by their temple
on Santa Monica Blvd., it sits on acres of high priced real estate, up on a hill and looks like a freaking palace or something.

One can only wonder where all that money comes from, but I guess when you require followers to hand over 10% of their yearly income they have enough on hand at all times...especially to meddle with other people's lives.

The San Francisco Chronicle did several stories in the Sunday 10/26 edition and that wasn't the first time that I saw it mentioned in our local media.

There are many Mormons in California but has others have pointed out, the church encouraged funding and phone banking among Mormons outside of the state too.

103. My son and I were just talking
and we'd like to see a proposition to actually END ballot initiatives. Bill Maher said something to that effect last week. I'm thinking this might be a worthy cause if we can get enough support for it. If we could just get everyone to protest by voting NO on any and every proposition, that would be a start.

No more of this kind of misleading crap!!!!

117. My thought is: Don't end them, but require a 60% majority to pass
That way we won't see various muddled whims getting written into law; real public consensus would be needed. As it is, there's some cynical, odious notion on the ballot every single election; it's and abuse of the process, and not even the only one. We're starting to see businesses trying to weasel their way into financial advantages as well.

25. LDS violated their tax exempt status and funded the hateful yes on 8 campaign
No was polling well until LDS threw all the money at Yes. The commercials were terrible and pervasive. It was aimed at fears that the "gay lifestyle" would be taught in schools. I don't even understand what that means.

Wednesday I had to explain to my 8 year old that his uncle is married to his husband no matter what the state says. Disgusting.

Tax not only LDS but all the religious institutions that lobby (anti abortion, etc) and force themselves on the rest of us.

44. I don't think it would have passed if not for the LDS
The Yes ads were everywhere and diabolically clever. They preyed on the fears of the ignorant that the schools would promote the gay lifestyle. It made me livid to see those ads. The No campaign was underfunded and I think taken by surprise by the LDS and couldn't organize in time to effectively rebut.

57. Be careful
Disturbing a church service is a specific crime in some states -- maybe all. This would be civil disobedience and you should be prepared for the consequences.

Also, they know everyone who should be there and they will spot you in a Salt Lake City minute.

Two gay friends of mine who moved to town a few years ago are devout Christians. They got dressed up one Sunday and went to the big Christian church downtown -- with the best of intentions. An usher came over, told them they looked gay and asked if they were. They said yes -- and they were escorted from the premises.

53. What we need is some good street theater
Have a lot of young gay men dress up as the Mormon missionary boys and hold daily "kiss-ins" in front of the Temple.

Gay women of all ages can make their own temple garments -- pictures available online -- and also stage a kiss in.

Onlookers can wave their arms and shout "Pay Lay Ale." This is a super-secret sacred language from their super-secret Temple ceremony and they hate it when people shout that.

59. Fuck Roland Martin
I was watching CNN earlier and that POS totally pissed me off. I wasn't the only one who noticed. I found this recap on a gay-oriented board:

"Roland Martin just went on a totally bizarre anti-gay rant on CNN. Wolf Blitzer was looking at the data showing African-Americans voted 70% for Prop 8. Roland acted almost offended and went on a long rant about how African-Americans are especially religious. He then went on to positively portray how the Prop 8 supporters used Obama in their commercial. Roland was acting like Obama supports Prop 8. I've pretty much liked Roland Martin up until now but this was extremely offensive."

75. Protest Sunday - Saddleback Church --
SFExpat started a GD thread where we can post listings of protests going on -- add to it if you know of one!

http://saddleback8protest.blogspot.com /

Saddleback Church Prop 8 Protest!

This peaceful protest will take place this Sunday (November 9th) at 10AM PST. Please spread the word!! Prop 8 is unfair and unconstitutional. A church's definition of marriage should not be allowed to be applied to the whole population. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church came out publicly in an email to his congregation telling them to Vote Yes on 8.

Please bring your friends - gay or straight. Christian or not. All who support marriage equality are encouraged to come show their support in front of one of the largest churches in America. Bring your signs if you have them!

77. I love this
I know several Mormons. Very nice people. But the church cross the line. I think the members of the church have to understand bigotry and hatred won't be tolerated. No one was bothering their church until their church decided to tell the rest of Californians how to live. This need to end now. Frankly I want their taxation status changed.

84. I want them investigated for this
It's one thing to endorse an issue but a lot of money flowed in to the yes campaign from LDS. of course they laundered it through individual members of their church but this coordinated effort seemed unprecedented to me. They need to be investigated by the IRS, they walked the line between endorsing and lobbying.

89. Good. LDS needs to be exposed just like Scientologists are being exposed.
If they are going to attach their "good name" to Anti-American political movements, then their bran needs to be fully discredited.

"Oh- so you agree with the Mormons on civil rights issues? What other corrupt cults do you share beliefs with?"

LDS needs to be made radio-active.

Shit.... if only all political organizing was that easy. GO HARRISON!! :kick: :bounce: :patriot:

109. No Kidding!
People are mad as hell and they're not going to take it anymore!
( Thank you-'Network')

We are going to see a lot more protests, maybe every night.

This quote just fits right now ( and the passage of prop.h8 to the list of woes)

Howard Beale: 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell - 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Things have got to change. But first, you've gotta get mad!... You've got to say, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it:
Howard Beale: "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
